GUILTY TX - Joe Ramos Mercado shot GF's kids, San Antonio, 2014

Investigators say Mercado shot the 6-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl on the city's Southeast Side around 1 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Anton Drive near Goliad Road.

The woman and her two young children were trying to leave their home after she got into a dispute with Mercado. He then reportedly went into the house, retrieved a gun, and fired at the vehicle. The woman pulled her two children out of the car before the boyfriend took off in her vehicle.

The young boy was shot in the face and taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. He has since undergone surgery. His sister was grazed in the head by a bullet and was taken to University Hospital. Both children are expected to survive.

An 11-year-old girl suffered two grazing gunshot wounds to her head. The girlfriend was not injured.
