A body found in a bog in Kells, County Meath, Ireland, has been identified as Gerard 'Gerry ' Daly. The 40-year-old mysteriously vanished without trace in June 2011. Excavation workers at Oristown bog uncovered the remains three days ago and ID has just been confirmed by DNA.

It's a little strange though, as the burnt out shell of a stolen car was also discovered at the site, but that was reported stolen in 2003 - so 8 years before Gerry went missing. I'm wondering if this could be foul play by professional criminals or even a terrorist group, as I believe they will sometimes steal and store cars for long periods, before using them in a crime.

It hasn't been confirmed if it's connected though, or how Gerry died, but Gardai (police) stated while he was still missing that they believed he had been murdered.

Gerry was originally from Knockmore Grove in Tallaght, County Dublin. His loved ones and the community have been working very hard to find him over the past years. Anyone with information is asked to call crimestoppers at the number on the poster.

Rest in peace, Gerard Daly.

I think I may have missed a big part of the possible story here. I noticed ABC in Australia ran a story on Ireland's Disappeared yesterday (those who were disappeared by the IRA during the Troubles) Searchers are still combing Oristown Bog, where Gerard was found, for the body of one of these victims.

'Foreign Correspondent was on site at a bog near Oristown, in the Republic of Ireland, as forensic archaeologists began another painstaking search.

It was the fourth attempt to find Brendan Megraw's body.

The 23-year-old had been married for a year and his wife was pregnant when he was abducted from his home in 1978.

His last words to his wife were "I haven't done anything".

She never saw him again.'

Maybe Gerard is one of the disappeared too, although his death obviously happened long after the peace agreement. ABC also discussed the cases of the Disappeared on its FB page, at the link, but I'm not a member so couldn't get on it.

This article from 2012 states that no involvement with dissident activity has been uncovered. (i.e. terrorist groups such as the CIRA or RIRA who did/do not support the Good Friday Agreement)

I'll check a few more sources, but I read a lot about the troubles and don't recall his disappearance being mentioned as related. (And there ARE missing persons cases thought to be linked to the troubles since the Agreement in 1998, Lisa Dorrian for one, has been speculated to be related, although it could also be about drugs)

They did find Brendan:

The 42-year-old's neighbour, a former garda who was shot in the head in November 2012, was previously quizzed over the whereabouts of the well-known dog-breeder.

Mr Daly, who was originally from Knockmore Grove in Tallaght, lived next to ex-garda John Kerins in the townland of Cornaveagh. The pair were said to be planning to go into business together, breeding security dogs for business, before they had a fall-out and Mr Daly disappeared...

Despite some arrests, no one has ever been charged over the disappearance or murder of either man.
