Nothing that would be considered a forest. There may be a few trees/bushes near the Elbow River, though. But not enough to conceal a body or bodies.
The crime scene is pretty close to the downtown area.

Anyone who is more local can probably give better insight than me.
I don't live in Calgary, but I do have general knowledge about the city.

Google streetview shows this at the end of their street (about 4 houses down from the Liknes' home):

It's the Elbow River Pathway (iirc) that runs alongside the river.

AMBER Alert issued for missing five-year-old from Calgary

Calgary police are investigating the disappearance of a five-year-old child and his grandparents from a home in the southwest and issued an AMBER Alert on Monday afternoon.

Police were called to a home in the 100 block of 38A Avenue SW at about 10:00 a.m. Monday by a mother who went to the home to pick up her son who was staying with his grandparents.

The three were not at the residence and have not been located despite efforts by police.

Investigators say evidence at the scene suggests their disappearance may be suspicious.

I think that if DG is who I think he is, he has respect already."

Do you mean...another ID? Or am I reading this all wrong?

In regards to 'respect' & 'idolizing' *shudders to think anyone would give that kind of glory to anybody who did anything horrific to a CHILD!!*....

I seem to recall in discussions/reading...that most inmates don't hold child killers *if he is in fact convicted* in very high regard...

In fact aren't they targeted a lot of times for that?

I don't have any links or verification to back that up...I just remember reading different stories at different times about what is thought of as unacceptable & unforgiveable even by other criminals...JMOO

Cherchri, I was just looking at EL's Facebook page...she has a new photo...super-blonde and long hair...this isn't the lady you saw today is it? I have no clue what NL looks like. :(

Yes, I think if you are a child killer you would have a target on your back in prison. What I meant about if DG is who I think he is... I think he is well respected in his criminal world prior to murdering an innocent child. I think his status with his fellow criminal friends will be enough to overlook the murder of an innocent child. Such a harsh viewpoint for me but that is part of my theory.

E[modsnip] was saying she knew DG was no longer under suicide watch and wondered if he was in general population. We agreed not likely because child killers don't survive long in general population. She said even the most hardened criminals who have committed terrible crimes, have it in for child killers. I don't know how things are at the remand centre for awaiting trial prisoners. I mean if they have yet to be proven guilty of a crime but are alleged to have killed a child.... Then what?

Nope not EL. What a character! She is instantly recognizable. :)

If I can throw my 2 cents in on the drug use in the o&g (and hopefully it isn't a dead horse) but from personal experience I can promise you that its only certain levels of workers who abuse drugs. You will find that a vast majority of them are subject to random drug testing and the majority of long term workers wont risk their well paying jobs for it.
Spring break up is another matter though...

It would be interesting to know how he would be viewed. I hear what you're saying….If he was someone important he would be respected.

Buuut, I'm also wondering that now since he is charged with killing an innocent child AND let's say Cherchri is right and chemicals were used - these two things might make him very unpopular as he might've crossed a 'prison ethic' line... Wasn't Jeffrey Dahmer unpopular in prison? I think inmates found him *too* sick and twisted, not to mention he was just plain weird, a loner with not good social skills (at least that's what I know about him, correct me if I'm wrong anyone!)

I should would like to be a fly on the wall in maximum security if DG ever goes there!

ETA - I'm lumping DG together with Jeffrey Dahmer, as I personally feel using chemicals to rid of a human is just as sick as cannibalism, I wonder if hardened criminals feel the same? JMO.

That random drug testing came about subsequent to the Solicitor General's concerns per the link I shared. The other link I shared highlighted a high incidence of the boutique drugs by executives in Calgary across various industries.... They say due to affluenza. My ex husband, an engineer, worked in O & G here in Calgary for years. I have first hand experience of the a"partying" that went on. Tons of substance abuse. Alcohol and drugs. Call me a liar if I am a day out but I recall they partied 5 out of 7 nights a week. Worked hard and played harder. Strip clubs, pubs, pool halls the works. It did not bode well for my marriage nor many others in that group of employees. I must add, in fairness, my ex never did drugs. Alcohol in copious quantity but never drugs.

I have attended some pretty swanky parties in the EPCM O&G world alongside the classy executives and I will tell you the white stuff is abundant with some.

I don't know. I feel like if you have the key to a successful murder plot and you are a wholesaler of chemicals you may have some interest and some skill to offer.

I think you'll find the majority of "users" are those that arent subject to frequent testing... I.e. execs :)
Sorry, was not super clear in my post.
However I will say that the white stuff is prominent in a LOT of white collar Calgary. I think I see more drug use now than I did as a teen!

Now that I have some free time to write, can I just say how underwhelming today was...

What, if anything, does it say about the evidence? No application for bail, no psych assessment, just set a date and go.

Perhaps it's weak and they know they'll have to just go through the process. Perhaps it's damning, and it's a negotiation strategy. Perhaps lawyer and client haven't agreed on a strategy yet. Even if there was nothing to it, would they have bothered asking for bail?

Perhaps they just don't have enough of it yet, and simply can't do anything.

I can't imagine how disappointed and frustrated the family must feel. Regardless of the guilt or innocence, just not knowing what happened, and knowing that LE has so much more info they could be sharing.

I can't imagine being the LE contact person with the family, knowing you can't provide them any relief even though you know you possibly could.

... and DG. Guilty and trying to get off with as little as possible, or innocent and forced to spend at least a year of his life in jail to prove it... with elderly parents in the last years of their lives.

What a mess.

Ha! Maybe we worked together!

Oh my word! Quite possible. Wouldn't that be a turnover for the books as they say. He was/is such a handsome and charming jigger as were many if his playmates :)

Want to give a big thank you to Cherchri for braving the courts today and giving us some first hand accounts and information!!

I almost forgot to say thanks! :tyou:

I'm on my laptop now, and not iPhone, so I can type better too...
