    OR - Stevan Haugen, 54, & Jeanette Bauman, 56, Willamette NF, 29 June 2005

A man and a woman who were found slain in the woods have been identified as a pair of Oakridge teachers.
The bodies of 54-year-old Stevan Haugen and 56-year-old Jeanette Bauman were found by campers near a U.S. Forest service road, about 25 miles south of Oakridge.

Both had been shot to death, as was a dog belonging to Haugen.

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

    Any updates?

This is scary. Reminds me of the Cutshall/Allen murders on the CA beach. Wasn't there another double murder at a campsite in Arizona or something? Anybody else remember this? Anyway, I am wondering if there isn't some nut seeking out campers. I wonder if there's a connection? Any updates would be appreciated. So awful, shot their dog too?? Took souvenir license plates, or just using them to commit another terrible crime?

    This is from 07/27

Most of the couple's gear was missing from their vehicle. Lane County deputies are looking for the equipment.

Anyone who sees abandoned camping or fly-fishing gear is asked to call the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

To avoid jeopardizing their investigation, police are keeping mum about the type of weapon used to gun the two down, and about the wounds inflicted on them and the dog.

Both Haugen and Bauman recently moved to the Oakridge area to seek jobs as teachers. Haugen worked for the Oakridge School District as a middle-school counselor.

Someone -- likely the suspects -- removed the license plates from the victim's vehicle. The license plates are Crater Lake plates -- CL47763 -- and are listed as stolen. Anyone who observes those plates on a vehicle or anywhere else is asked to call 911.

Also, the Sheriff's Office would like to talk to anyone who was in the Camper's Flat area between Wednesday, June 29 and Friday, July 1, to contact the Sheriff's Office at 682-4141.

    Thanks mysteriew!

This case is so disturbing! No news. Doesn't sound too promising that they'll solve this one. Do keep us posted if anything new happens with this. How sad, to seek out nature, only to become prey to some sicko excuse for a human(s).

A Douglas County judge said he found no link between a recent double homicide south of Oakridge and a seemingly similar killing from 2003.

As a result, Circuit Judge Ronald Poole denied a request by attorneys for Samuel Lawson, 30, to review records of the July 2005 killings of Stevan L. Haugen, 54, and his companion, Jeanette E. Bauman, 56.

Haugen and Bauman were shot near their campground south of Oakridge in Lane County. Despite an intense investigation and a review of similar cases, detectives have made no arrests.

Lawson is set to go to trial for an attack that appears similar, at least on the surface: the August 2003 shooting death of Noris L. Hilde, 52, and the wounding of his wife, Sherl A. Hilde, now 47. The Hildes were attacked while camping east of Roseburg -- maybe a dozen miles as the crow flies from where Haugen and Bauman were killed.

OR - Jeanette Bauman & Steve Haugen, Willamette National Forest, June 2005

I searched, but couldn't find this elsewhere on Websleuths. My apologies if it's in another forum and I missed it.

    From CNN--7/1/09:

There is no apparent motive in either case. Haugen was a school counselor and track coach, and Bauman taught business. Neither had any known enemies.
According to police, the killer took some camping items and the license plate from their 1997 GMC Jimmy SUV.
There is also a video link in the article.

    http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/07/01/...tml#cnnSTCText

In the video the reporter made the following points:
    - don't think they were shot from close range
    - shell casings were found
    - LE won't say if JB was sexually assaulted

Is this couple a possible victim of Israel Keyes?
The article also mentions the shootings a year later of Mary Cooper and her daughter Susanna Stodden under similar circumstances.

Slater says one theory is that this could be the work of what's called a "superhunter".

Slater says according to the FBI, a superhunter is someone who moves into a National Forest and calls it their own.

The FBI has said they are territorial and can kill.

They sometimes take a few items of the deceased as a token.

It's unknown if this is a superhunter, however. It's also unknown if this person acted alone.

Bumping for Stevan and Jeanette. I can't believe someone could do this to innocent people trying to enjoy the great outdoors, and their dog, this brings me to tears. I pray for justice for them so their families can have some closure and peace. As an avid camper & hiker this is pretty frightening, what is wrong with people. SMH. From the article that Justice posted above, http://www.kval.com/news/local/Unsol...312948261.html -

The sheriff's office said DNA testing technology has significantly advanced since 2005.

Items found near the crime scene are currently being tested at the Oregon State Police crime lab.

Slater said he still has his eyes on two or three people - but said there's not enough evidence to arrest them.

That's why he needs the public's help. There is still a $5,000 reward for information leading to the murder.
I hope they can catch a huge break with the new testing, enough to make an arrest. It's only been a couple months since this article was written so I pray they find something new. Or that someone who has knowledge of this decides to finally do the right thing & come forward. Sending love and prayers to the families of these two adventurous spirits, you are in our thoughts.
