Algerian extremists linked to terror group ISIS have beheaded a French hostage, after France refused the group's demands to withdraw from US-led air strikes in Iraq.

'Herve Gourdel, 55, was kidnapped on Sunday while hiking in a national park that was once a magnet for tourists but later became a sanctuary for Islamists.'

A video showing the beheading was released yesterday. French president Francoise Holland, who is currently attending a UN assembly in New York, has denounced the killing.

'A group calling itself Jund al-Khilafah, or Soldiers of the Caliphate, had said they would kill the French mountaineer after abducting him Sunday unless France ended its airstrikes against ISIS fighters in Iraq within 24 hours.'

'France started airstrikes in Iraq on Friday, the first country to join the U.S. military campaign against ISIS fighters there.'

'The latest images are entitled 'Blood message for the French government' and was directly aimed at the French government in retaliation for air strikes.

Mr Gourdel advertised his work on his professional website, saying that being a mountaineer enabled him to 'escape from office life'. He regularly led expeditions in places like Nepal and Jordan, and the Atlas mountains in Morocco.

French media have reported he was married with two grown up children, and parents in their 80s.'

These be-headings are almost becoming commonplace anymore. I remember when Daniel Pearl was murdered....I thought what a vile, horrible way to die......absolutely shocking. In today's world they're almost expected. Sad, sad world we live in.
