Trial set to begin for man accused of beheading coworker in Moore

    http://kfor.com/2017/09/11/trial-set...rker-in-moore/

After he was found competent, Nolen refused to reaffirm his guilty plea, which sent the case to trial.

“He wouldn’t even acknowledge any questions being posed to him at that time, so we couldn’t go forward with the guilty plea this morning,” said Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn.

The trial is set to begin on Monday morning, and officials say Nolen will be able to plead guilty any time during the trial.

Jury Being Selected For 2014 Beheading Case

The jurors were asked if they could consider all three punishment options of death, life with the possibility of parole and life without the possibility of parole. Anyone who was firm one way or another was dismissed.

On Wednesday the final 12 jurors and two or three alternates will likely be chosen.

Testimony at Moore beheading trial to begin

    http://newsok.com/testimony-at-moore...rticle/5564184

A jury was told Thursday that murder defendant Alton Alexander Nolen beheaded a co-worker in 2014 at a Moore food plant because of delusional religious beliefs.

"He believed it 100 percent that what he was doing was right," attorney Shea Smith said in the defense's opening statement to jurors.
Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn, though, told the jury the evidence will show Nolen made choices in carrying out the attack that prove he knew what he was doing was wrong.

"This defendant was purposeful and deliberate," the prosecutor said in his opening statement. "He was clear in his thoughts and intent."
After the opening statements, District Judge Lori Walkley went over with prosecutors and defense attorneys what photos jurors will be allowed to see.

The judge ruled jurors will be able to see one photo of the victim's severed head at the plant. Defense attorneys had complained that photo was too prejudicial and unnecessary.

First witness at murder trial describes beheading

    http://newsok.com/first-witness-at-m...rticle/5564273

He described in detail what he saw, saying Hufford was "completely surprised" by the attack.

He identified murder defendant, Alton Alexander Nolen, 33, of Moore, as the man he saw repeatedly sawing at Hufford's neck after throwing her to the floor.

"I was looking at something horrific, something that people shouldn't have to see, pretty much powerless to do anything about it," he said.

    From the story:

“I fell onto my back and he kept trying to stab [me],” he said. “I kept telling him I had a son. I thought I was going to die.”

The witnesses gave their accounts of what happened Sept. 25, 2014, at Vaughan Foods, now Fresh Creative Foods, including the moments that led up to Vaughan Foods executive and Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Mark Vaughan ending Nolen’s attacks by shooting and wounding him.

    From the story:

Hazelrigg, who was the customer service manager at the Vaughan Foods plant at the time, told the jury that he screamed and cursed at Nolen during the attack and tried to pull him off Hufford.

"Sadly, it was to no avail. He was not to be moved," Hazelrigg testified.

Employees Testify In Alton Nolen Murder Trial

    http://www.newson6.com/story/3639635...n-murder-trial

Traci Johnson testified. She was nervous as she walked into the courtroom to face her assistant. Johnson was severely injured by Nolen in 2014. She held the assistant district attorney's hand as she walked in the courtroom.

Johnson was getting ready to change in the locker room close to the end of her shift, when she heard "bloody murder screaming". She said she saw Colleen Hufford injured. Johnson was planning to change and sit with Hufford until help arrived, but she encountered Nolen.

"When I saw the defendant, I was frozen. I couldn't move. And I saw the knife with the blood on the knife and he made a mad dash toward me and pushed me up against the wall and held me up with his forearm against the wall and just started splicing my neck," said Johnson.

Her jugular veins were damaged, her face and finger were cut.

Johnson said, "He was just going back and forth like he was just cutting a piece of meat."

Jurors hear interviews with Alton Nolen explaining why he beheaded co-worker

    http://okcfox.com/news/local/jurors-...aded-co-worker

In those tapes Nolen answers questions in a very matter-of-fact way with seemingly little emotion. He told the investigators he beheaded Hufford because he felt oppressed as a Muslim. Nolen carefully explained his interpretation of the Quran and said no one guided him in the religion and that he came his beliefs on his own.
    http://www.newson6.com/story/3641611...layed-in-trial

After court, Mashburn said, "It's all in the context of what legally insane means. And that is (Nolen) didn't know the difference between right and wrong, and (he) didn't know the consequences of his actions. And clearly he knew what he did was wrong."

Murder defendant Alton Nolen has schizophrenia, defense psychologist testifies at murder trial

    http://newsok.com/jury-at-beheading-...rticle/5565452

The expert witness, psychologist Antoinette McGarrahan, told jurors she diagnosed Nolen as having schizophrenia.

"I do think it has gotten worse over time," she said.

She also described him as hyper-religious. She testified he said things like "in the name of Allah" when it really wasn't appropriate to what was being asked.
A religious expert, though, testified for the defense Monday that Nolen's justification for the beheading is not found in the Quran at all.

"It does not exist," said Robert Hunt, a professor at Southern Methodist University and the author of "Muslim Faith and Values: What Every Christian Should Know,"

Hunt explained to jurors that the Quran teaches Muslims that striking an enemy at the neck is acceptable in war, not to resolve a personal insult.

Moore beheading trial: “I found him to be quite delusional”

    http://kfor.com/2017/09/26/moore-beh...-psychiatrist/

The second witness to testify in court Tuesday was Dr. Anita Jeanne Russell, a psychologist based in Tulsa. Dr. Russell, like McGarrahan, told the court Nolen was mentally ill and "insane" during the incident.

Russell met with Nolen in 2015 for an evaluation. She testified he cooperated but tried to dictate the conversation, adding he would not talk about his personal life.

"I found him to be quite delusional," she told the court Tuesday.
    http://www.normantranscript.com/news...91ff18259.html

A second psychologist called by Alton Nolen’s defense team testified Tuesday that it’s possible Nolen’s alleged mental illness started when he left home and had to fend for himself.

“Nolen had never been out on his own. He isolated himself. He wasn’t well liked and everything started to spin out of control,” Tulsa psychologist Anita Jeanne Russell said. “He progressively declined and he continues to get sicker.”

The punishment portion of the trial has taken place in three phases. The jury recommended three life sentences plus 55 and 75 years for the assault convictions.

The jury now will decide his fate for the murder conviction. First, the jury must determine if Nolen is intellectually disabled.

The jury has to unanimously say Nolen is intellectually disabled for the death penalty to be taken off the table. If they do not, then, in the final portion of the trial, the jury could put Nolen to death for beheading Colleen Hufford.

    http://www.news9.com/story/36583739/...or-alton-nolen

The jury has recommended the Death Penalty for Alton Nolen in the Vaughan Foods beheading trial.

Jurors reached their sentence recommendation after deliberating for about three hours.

The formal sentencing date is set for Dec. 15 at 9:30 a.m.in Judge Lori Walkley's courtroom.
    http://newsok.com/jury-deliberating-...rticle/5567770

"It feels like all of the emotions that you hold in for three years are finally able to break free," said Kelli Beranek, daughter of murder victim Colleen Hufford.

"Now ... we can all move on," she said. "We can all start remembering her as a person instead of her in this situation."
"Thank heavens it's over," Johnson, 46, of Oklahoma City, said after the verdict Thursday. "I don't have to worry about him anymore. I can rest in peace. Colleen can rest in peace."

"It was hard," jury foreman Brian M. said of the unanimous decision for a death sentence. "It just, it goes against some people's morals. And, you know, you got to, got to weigh everything out, talk it out, talk it over. As horrible as it was, yep.

"We had to work at it," the foreman told The Oklahoman. "That's all I'll say. We had to work at it."
