Three Ground Zero firemen die of cancer on the same day
Three retired firefighters who worked at ground zero died on the same day from cancer, an illness that many fear might be connected to toxic World Trade Center dust released on Sept. 11, fire officials said Thursday.
Lt. Howard Bischoff, 58, and firefighters Robert Leaver, 56, and Daniel Heglund, 58, died within hours of one another Monday.
Their deaths are "a painful reminder that 13 years later we continue to pay a terrible price for the department's heroic efforts," Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a statement.

The FDNY said somber goodbyes Friday to two of the three firefighters who died on the same day this week from 9/11-related illnesses.
Firefighter Robert Leaver, 56, was mourned at St. Francis of Assisi Church in West Nyack. Leaver toiled at Ground Zero for months after 9/11 looking for missing firefighters. He lost his battle with leukemia on Monday.
The funeral for Firefighter Daniel (Sam) Heglund, 58, was held in Centerport, in Suffolk County. Heglund, who served 21 years in the FDNY, died one day shy of his 59th birthday. He suffered from esophageal cancer that metastasized into his bones.
