    CO - Jack McAtee, 27, Breckenridge, 19 September 2014

    http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news...re-than-a-week

Jack McAtee, 27, was last seen in Breckenridge on Sept. 19. He is described at 5-feet, 10-inches tall, weighing 170 pounds and having dark hair.

McAtte's family believes he was hitchhiking on Interstate 70 after he was involved in a car crash on Dillon Dam Road, in Summit County.

His father, Steve McAtee, said Jack is bipolar and had not been taking his medication.

“Normally he does really well, but he went off his medication recently,” Steve McAtee said.

He said his son has gone missing twice before but the family was always able to locate him. “We’ve saved him every time before,” he said. “This time just seems to be more dangerous that the others.”

Steve McAtee and his daughter came to Moab earlier this week to enlist the help of local law enforcement in the event that Jack McAtee had traveled to the area. “He’s camped around [Moab, UT] many times before and actually intended to come here around this time,” his father, Steve McAtee said.

Thinking of cases we've seen here on WS where people vanish after a car accident, only for their remains to be found a year or three later just beyond the initial search area, I'm wondering about Jack's accident. Was there any indication he was injured, maybe hit his head?

It's about 300 miles between Breckenridge and Moab. If he was trying to make his way there for whatever reason, that's an awful lot of territory to cover in the search for him.

Yeah, and a lot that territory is very wild. This is the route: https://goo.gl/maps/3wNng

I'm wondering about the head injury too. We've seen it so often...

The day before he went missing Breckenridge resident Jack McAtee crashed his car into Dillon Reservoir at around 6:40 p.m. on Sept. 18. His black sedan veered onto the paved bicycle path, cutting through a 10-foot opening between a steel guardrail and a concrete highway barrier, according to a Colorado State Patrol report. The car left the path, rolling for about 135 feet across dirt and gravel along the reservoir. It went airborne for 110 feet, turning end over end, before it crashed into the water.

His car was almost entirely submerged. Miraculously, he swam to the surface, with only a laceration above his left eye.

McAtee claimed he had fallen asleep at the wheel. A state trooper interviewing McAtee said he did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Jack McAtee went missing Sept. 19, a day after crashing into the reservoir and acting erratically with the state trooper who helped him...

McAtee was held at the Summit County jail for a mental evaluation after the crash. He was released the next day and hasn't been seen since.

McAtee had asked the trooper about hitchhiking.

“At one point, McAtee asked the trooper if hitchhiking was legal in Colorado. Within certain guidelines, it can be, the trooper explained. McAtee then asked him where he would hitchhike if heading west on Interstate 70,” the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

However, a trucker in the Wheat Ridge area near Denver reported seeing McAtee.

Because of that tip, and the fact McAtee has made no bank transactions since his disappearance, the family is now focusing efforts closer to home. They now believe it's possible he is still in the Summit County area. Posters have been put up all over town and along trailheads.

His father said McAtee is a poet who is adventurous and outgoing, loves nature, and has lots of friends. He has has been off his medicine for bi-polar disorder for at least two weeks.

Missing posters have been posted around Summit County, in Denver and Moab, Utah, on trailheads around Breckenridge and in truck stops from Salt Lake City to St. Louis, Steve McAtee said. Church groups have helped get the word out and searched for him in shelters. The Sheriff's Office also has searched, with dogs, and has alerted hunters that he may be staying in a cabin in Summit County. His father said that McAtee has camped many places and can survive in the wilderness...

McAtee plunged into the reservoir about 6:40 p.m. Sept. 18. His car veered off Dillon Dam Road onto a paved bicycle path and then fell off a cliff, tumbling end over end 110 feet into the water, authorities said. Although the car was almost entirely submerged, he swam to the surface and only suffered a cut above his left eye. "If you look saw the picture, you can't imagine how anyone could have survived," Steve McAtee said.

A $5,000 reward has been established for information about Jack McAtee, who has been missing the past 10 days and could be hitchhiking.

From Jack's Dad, as part of Update #13, under "About" tab (from their website for Jack -- link at bottom of this post):

"There's no one I have ever met in my life that has a more tender heart for God than our Jack. A couple of years ago during this Christmas season in December, Jack was in the midst of a 30 day stint volunteering at a homeless shelter downtown.Living there 24 /7.He loved being there, helping and encouraging the homeless, making them feel better about themselves. Giving them a feeling of self worth and light at the end of the tunnel. Hope. That is the kind of heart he has. Always holding out hope for others. Perhaps at times so much so to the negation of his own hope. Gregarious, lovable, brilliant: all words commonly used to describe Jack by those who have known him."

    Shelters
Per Jack's family, Jack has bipolar disorder and was thought to have stopped taking his medication around the time of his disappearance. Perhaps kind-hearted Jack has found his way back to homeless shelters, where he so unselfishly helped others...just putting the word out to WSers, about this aspect.

Jack sounds like an incredible human being, with very loving family members who desperately miss him. I pray he is alive and well, and that he will be found.

This young man could be anywhere by now. I wish people realized just how dangerous hitchhiking is now.
