The poor son :(

I have a hinky feeling an affair is behind this. JMO. MOO.

Unrelated but a Covina PD Motorcycle Officer was just been declared dead after an accident whilst he was chasing a suspect, also on a bike. Sad day for the southland, along with the poor woman found at the recycling facility this morning :(

Authorities on the scene of the shooting told reporters that 45-year-old Mayor Daniel Crespo died after being shot multiple times in the torso by his wife, who was identified as Levette Crespo, 43.

Their 19-year-old son tried to intervene in an argument between the couple in their bedroom at about 2:30 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Steve Jauch said.

As father and son struggled, Levette Crespo produced a firearm and shot her husband, according to Jauch.

She was detained by police, the lieutenant said.

Daniel Crespo was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"Father and son struggled". It sounds like self defense. Especially since she was released without charge.

What I think happened:

Husband was being abusive in the bedroom, son stepped in to help mom, father and son fought, mom pulled out the gun to get husband off of son.

KFIAM640 (BLOG): Wife of slain Los Angeles-area mayor released

Authorities: Bell Gardens, CA mayor killed by wife via @KTLA & @mpamer http://bit.ly/ZpFL3f

BELL GARDENS, Calif. (AP) — The wife suspected of shooting and killing the mayor of a Los Angeles County city has been released after hours of questioning, authorities said.

Sheriff's homicide detectives detained and interviewed Levette Crespo after the shooting death Tuesday of her husband Daniel Crespo, the mayor of Bell Gardens, but determined no arrests will yet be made in the case, Sheriff's Deputy Crystal Hernandez said.

The facts of the investigation will be turned over to prosecutors who will decide whether to file charges.

Paramedics were called to a Bell Gardens condominium shortly after 2:30 p.m. Crespo, 45, and his wife, Levette Crespo, 43, had gotten into an argument, Hernandez said.
Their son, Daniel Jr., 19, tried to intervene, and Crespo got into a struggle with him, she said.
Levette Crespo got a gun and shot her husband several times in the torso, Hernandez said. He later died at a hospital.

Both Levette Crespo and Daniel Crespo Jr. were taken in for questioning, Hernandez said.

Crespo and his wife were high school sweethearts who married in 1986. They met in New York, according to a biography on the city's website.

The city's website Tuesday night had an image of a black bow and a statement from Mayor Pro Tem Priscilla Flores and three councilmembers that said the shooting doesn't appear to be related to Crespo's mayoral activities.

"Our thoughts and prayers should be with Mayor Crespo's family at this tragic time," the statement said.

Crespo had been a county deputy probation officer for 15 years, according to the website. However, county CEO Bill Fujioka stated in a Twitter posting that Crespo had more than 21 years with the probation department.

"Authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting, but Daniel Crespo's brother, William, told KTLA-TV that the couple had been arguing over finances Tuesday.

The mayor of Bell Gardens was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in a dispute with his wife, who was briefly detained, authorities said.

William Crespo recalled his brother telling him: "'She’s over here fighting that I spend too much money.'"

He also described his brother as being "really tired" after having worked days and nights.

"She won't let him sleep," William Crespo said of his brother's wife, Levette."

She won't let him sleep?? What is that supposed to mean?

Starting to sound like his wife was living a nightmare. Very telling that there have been no charges as yet.

"William Crespo did admit to KTLA that his brother was having an affair and that his mistress was pregnant.

The mayor was considering leaving his wife, his brother said, adding that Levette Crespo was a jealous woman."

In depth write up in the LA Times:

Bell Gardens left stunned by fatal shooting of mayor - LA Times

When word swept through Bell Gardens that Mayor Daniel Crespo had been shot, some in the area immediately assumed it was politically motivated.
Crespo had been a target of threats in the southeast Los Angeles County city.

On Wednesday, a very different narrative emerged about Crespo's death: sheriff's officials say it was his wife who fatally shot him during a confrontation in the master bedroom of their Bell Gardens condominium.

Levette Crespo, 43, was arguing with her husband when their 19-year-old son intervened, sheriff's officials said. The mayor punched the teen in the face, prompting his wife to grab Crespo's handgun and shoot him three times in the upper body, said sheriff's Lt. Steve Jauch, who is overseeing the investigation.

That account of Tuesday's shooting, investigators said, was based on interviews with the mayor's wife and son. Jauch said detectives were working to establish whether forensic evidence matched what the pair told them.

Daniel Crespo Jr. and his mother had visible facial injuries that required medical treatment, sheriff's officials said. Law enforcement sources said that when the mayor's son was questioned by investigators, he backed up his mother's claims that she shot Crespo to save the teen.

Listened to local talk radio show about this case. Local rumors are that he was physically abusive to his wife for many years. I don't have any links, just what was said by 2 local callers to the show on KFI radio. I don't know if there is any evidence to support that however.

Only On 2: Were Explosive Text Messages Sent From Slain Mayor’s Wife To His Alleged Mistress? « CBS Los Angeles

BELL GARDENS (CBSLA.com) — As friends and family remembered slain Bell Gardens mayor Daniel Crespo Friday, more details were emerging about his alleged extramarital relationships.

(snip)

Willy Crespo, the mayor’s brother, told KCAL9 on Thursday that he believed the fact his brother had told his wife about an extramarital affair may have played a role in the shooting.

On Friday, CBS2’s Serene Branson obtained text messages reportedly sent by Levette Crespo to a woman who says she had a six-month relationship with the slain mayor.

It is a story that is Only On 2.

Branson spoke to a woman who said she was an ex-Crespo girlfriend.

The woman did not want to give her name or tell her story on camera. She did however share some of the text messages.

In a text dated August 13, Crespo’s wife reportedly wrote, “[Expletive], if I find out your borrowing money from my husband we’re going to have a problem!!!!!”

Just last week, on September 25, another text. It’s from Crespo, in her phone as “The Puerto Rican Prince.”

He wrote, “I’m so tired running around wish I had u in my arms.” She replied, “Would be nice.”

Only five days after that exchange, officers responded to the Crespo home and found Levette had shot Daniel to death.

Detectives look at Bell Gardens mayor's reported extramarital affairs - LA Times

Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives examining the fatal shooting of Bell Gardens Mayor Daniel Crespo are investigating whether the victim had extramarital affairs with women, as part of the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death, sources told the Los Angeles Times on Friday.

The law enforcement sources, who requested anonymity because of the ongoing probe, said they had received information that Crespo had relationships with women besides his wife. But the sources stressed that it was only one of many leads they were pursuing in the investigation.

Another source said the mayor's lifestyle was "definitely" a factor in the investigation into the fatal shooting of Crespo by his wife Tuesday afternoon at their Bell Gardens condominium.

Eber Bayona, an attorney representing Lyvette Crespo, told reporters that his client was a years-long victim of domestic violence, and was prepared to show investigators evidence, including photographs and statements.

The mayor's brother denied those allegations, telling KABC-TV Channel 7 that his brother was having an affair that he believed prompted a fight between the mayor and his wife immediately before the shooting.
