MO - Freida Franks, 44, Joplin, 17 August 2001
Sheriff Ken Copeland reported that Mark T. Walsh, 57, is charged with the murder of Freida Franks, which allegedly occurred at a Newton County campground in August 2001.
Copeland said Freida Franks was reported missing in Newton County in 2002, the same year that Walsh was arrested and charged for molesting a young girl in Stone County, Mo. He said that young girl was Franks’ daughter, and Walsh was found guilty of that crime and is now serving time in the Missouri correctional system...
He said Det. Mike Barnett, following up on the old case, had contact with Franks’ daughter a few months ago. “She had recalled, and had seen her mother stabbed while they were at Zan’s Creekside Campground, 2480 Coyote Rd., Joplin,” Copeland said. “Freida’s daughter says that in August of 2001 she was with her mother, Freida, and Mark Walsh at Zan’s Creekside Campground. Freida walked in and caught Walsh molesting the young girl. Freida and Walsh got into it and she watched him pick up a large knife and started cutting her and stabbing her in the chest with it. She saw her mother hit the ground and he took her into another room of this little RV, and she did not see her mother since that time.”
Carroll County Investigator Ralph Gordon said Thursday that Walsh claimed he burned the body over a three-day period and dumped the remains of Freda Franks, 42, in the Osage Creek south of Green Forest at an undisclosed location...
Walsh, an apparent drifter with ties to Carroll County, has been held for two years by Stone County authorities in connection with a two-state case that was suspected to involve kidnapping, child pornography, sexual abuse of a child, arson, and the disappearance of Franks.

Newton County prosecutor Jake Skouby charged Mark T. Walsh with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and statutory sodomy in the death of Freida Franks, 57, a Newton County woman whose body was never found after she disappeared in August 2001...
"At the time when (Walsh) was interviewed, it was thought that he had possibly killed Freida Franks, but we thought maybe it occurred in Arkansas somewhere and it more or less went cold," Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said.
After he interviewed the abuse victim again, Barnett went to the state penitentiary to interview Walsh, who denied everything, Copeland said.

A judge ordered a state inmate bound over for trial Tuesday on charges that he killed a woman who caught him in the act of sexually abusing a child 13 years ago at a campground near Joplin.
Associate Judge Gregory Stremel found probable cause at a preliminary hearing in Newton County Circuit Court for Mark T. Walsh, 57, to stand trial on charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and first-degree statutory sodomy.
