Canada - Outreach group issues gang rape warning for St John's sex workers

"Program co-ordinator Laura Winters says sex workers have been approached online or on the street and are taken to a hotel on the understanding they will be meeting one person.

Winters alleges when the sex worker arrives, they are forced into a room where up to 20 men are waiting."

"Part of the danger is that people feel they cannot report this kind of thing to police," said Winters. "So hopefully if it's happened to them, they feel that (the Safe Harbour Outreach Program) is a safe place to come forward with the information."

Winters said it is believed the men are associated with a crew working on a major construction project in the province, although she would not say which one.

She said she also thinks the men involved believe they won't get caught.

"These are not disposal people," Winters said of the sex workers. "These are members of our society that deserve the same rights, the same respect and the same safety that everybody does."

"According to the outreach group, when a woman arrives at a hotel door, she is "forced into a hotel room where there are several men waiting. Some reports have stated 12 men, other reports have been as high as 20."

Jenny Wright, the executive director of the St. John's Status of Women Council, which operates the outreach project, said it's one of the scariest threats to sex workers she's heard of in the area.

"Sexual assaults of this kind are absolutely horrific. A woman could be killed from this kind of assault," said Wright."

Can barely summon any words to respond to this atrocity - but feel people should respond with every tool available to catch these monsters.

How is someone able to convince 12 or men to even agree to this act of inhumanity? There has to be a leader among them - who got the room(s)? Who gave out the invitation, time and address of the room(s)?

Where are these people from? Canada? Temporary foreign workers? I think the purpose was to film the act(s) for sale on-line, so imo they will be caught before very long.

I have to think that among these 12 or more men, there are some with wives and kids. How will they explain their actions? Who will forgive them for this unforgivable act?

Hopefully when they are caught, the media splashes every name with a photo across the front pages of every newspaper in the country and beyond.

Unbelievable.
