Santa Clara County prosecutors have dropped murder charges against a Gilroy doctor accused of hiring a hitman to stab his wife to death after determining the killer acted independently in an attempt to frame the husband.

Charges against 68-year-old German Baldeon were dismissed Tuesday and he was set free. He was arrested in June after his physician wife, 74-year-old Doris Knapp, was found stabbed to death.

“I wanted to do this case because it was a Matlock case,” said defense attorney Paula Canny. “Matlock’s clients are always innocent. Dr. Baldeon was innocent. I knew it form the beginning.”

On Monday, Gilroy Police confirmed that David Galvez turned himself in some time last week as the Santa Clara County DA's Office worked in collaboration with the U.S. Marshal's Office...

Prosecutors did not provide a detailed explanation for the dismissal, but Baldeon's defense attorney, Paula Canny, told the San Jose Mercury News that Galvez acted independently. She says Galvez killed Knapp as part of an elaborate scheme to swindle the family out of their Ecuadoran condominium.

The last nine months have offered a continuing puzzle, a kind of Rubik's cube of crime, for anyone trying to figure out precisely what happened in the stabbing death of 74-year-old Doris Knapp in Gilroy...

The story has the flavor of an Agatha Christie mystery. When police were called to the home on Bristlecone Court at 6:31 p.m., they found Knapp lying on the floor next to the bed in the master bedroom. A safe in a cabinet next to Knapp's body was opened and a tray from the shelf was lying on the bed. No murder weapon has been found. The police say there was relatively little blood.

It was not the first time that day the cops were called to Bristlecone Court...
