A suspected human smuggler is reported to have demanded $16,000 from two victims' families in downtown LA Wednesday, to release them. He then made off with the unnamed victims in a 1980s BMW with a red soft top and red rims.

Initial reports said he was thought to be heading to San Diego, then Mexico. And that he'd met family members in a car park, before fleeing. There were also reports one victim had been released, but that seems to have been discounted too.

Confusing.

ETA: Suspect is around 20-25, 5'5", Hispanic, and about 165lbs. Wearing a Monster Energy hat, red stripe sweater and blue jeans.

Could this be people smuggled into the US illegally from Mexico, and hence the strangeness of the circumstances, with the victims not even named?

Very worrying. Fox says he took the victims AND the ransom money.

I wonder if family actually saw the victims, or he just said he had them? I'm thinking that if they were smuggled in, and did that desert crossing, maybe they never even made it.
