The victim was recovered from the Illinois/Michigan Shipping Canal near Summit, Illinois. Metal weights were attached to his body via rope.
It is believed that the victim may have been homeless at the time.

Couldn't find a thread for this man, but I came across him while searching for Mark Dribin (http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/3847dmor.html). While there's certainly a resemblance, I had actually meant to be searching in Idaho and was looking in Illinois.

The metal weights stand out to me; was this a suicide?

I think either a suicide or a murder. Someone could have pushed him over and tied the weights. But yes, a suicide is more likely.

I came across this missing man and I thought of this unidentified man.

Robert P Cavanagh would have had plenty of time to drive his truck from CT to IL after his 24 Dec 2004 disappearance. Why he would choose to do so is anyone else's guess. After noticing the timeline, the circumstances surrounding Robert's disappearance and the similarities in many of the physical descriptors I wonder if these are his remains.

Details of Disappearance
Cavanaugh was last seen in Mansfield, Connecticut on December 24, 2004. He left a note inside his home and drove away in his black 1996 Mazda B2300 pickup truck with the Connecticut license plate number 681CZT. He has never been heard from again. Few details are available in his case.
