The abduction attempt happened during a sun-drenched playtime Thursday, just after 12 p.m.

The playground behind Earl Kitchener public school at Dundurn Street near Aberdeen Avenue is fenced in. Playtime is monitored by staff.

Later the stories would come fast and furious, but one source said a school staffer had seen a child on the playground crying, and asked him what was wrong.

The child replied that someone took his friend away."

Police are looking for the suspect, described as standing about five feet seven inches tall, 160 pounds with a slight build, sculpted cheekbones with a pointy noise and wavy, chin-length hair. He was last seen wearing a grey T-shirt.

Today, police are canvassing the area in search of any video from the time of the incident, a spokeswoman said. Anyone with information is being asked to contact police."

"Down the street from the school, no more than 200 paces away, near where Homewood and MacDonald avenues meet, a woman sat parked in her car.

The woman — police would not release her name — was visiting a family member. She sat waiting, perhaps for the relative to show.

She saw the little boy crying. He was with a man.

She opened her car door, got out, and the boy came running to her.

The man fled, according to police, who said he was last seen walking south along MacDonald.

The woman would eventually find out he was someone the boy did not know".

Wow, lucky for that little boy. i've always taught my kids to go to a "mom" if they are in trouble (and can't find a police officer). Maybe his parents taught him the same thing. Hopefully they catch the guy. It will be interesting to see how he managed to get into a gated playground.

" A four-year-old knew he was in danger the minute a stranger grabbed him from the playground of Earl Kitchener public school and flung him over his shoulder.

"He was snatched from the schoolyard and carried away," said the boy's mom, who does not want their names used because the kidnapper hasn't been found. The school is in west Hamilton near Dundurn and Aberdeen streets. "The man was saying, 'We just have to go to my house and get something.'"

The senior kindergarten student was asking to go back to school and crying, "I don't know who you are," during the abduction on Thursday.

"He knew he was in trouble," said his mom Friday. "His plan was that when the man put him down, he was going to run."

"Hamilton police Detective Constable Debbie McGreal-Dinning believes this is the first time a child has been snatched from a school playground in the city.

“It’s the worst-case scenario,” said Noni Classen, the centre’s director.

But she said often all it takes to spook a kidnapper is one person noticing. The man in this case put the child down and fled when the women opened her car door and got out.

“We congratulate the individual … she potentially saved the life of a child,” said Classen. “Bringing attention typically is enough to disrupt it and the person will run away. That is key.”

Parents at the school wondered if they would have been alert enough to act".

" A 47-year-old Hamilton man police are accusing of trying to abduct a four-year-old at Earl Kitchener Public School last week has been in hospital since the day he grabbed the kindergarten student.

Hamilton police will be waiting when he is released from the "secure facility."

The man was picked up by officers under the Mental Health Act on Thursday after an unrelated incident that Constable Debbie McGreal-Dinning said she could not detail.

The news is an "absolute relief," to the boy's mother, whom The Spectator has agreed not to identify for privacy reasons."
 
''McGreal-Dinning said the assault charge stems from witnesses' reports that the man carrying the boy picked up an election sign and swung it aggressively after dropping him.

"I'm very, very happy to close this one," she said, adding that police do not know what the abductor's intentions were. "

am so grateful there were witnesses! Charges should stick......
 
very happy to see an arrest! hopefully this little boy won't even remember this when he gets older
 
I think he'll remember. But at least he will remember that he had a plan in his head and he followed it and saved himself. That is a very good thing.

And the very best part is, I believe, he will proudly tell other kids of good plan too! This is one of those times where something good can come out of something so terrifying.
