"Commander Ian Lafrenière of Montreal police said the description given by the victim in Saturday’s alleged assault matches that given by three other women who said they were sexually assaulted by a taxi driver.

In all, 17 sexual assaults by taxi drivers were reported this year, down from 29 last year, Lafrenière said.

The suspect in Saturday’s alleged assault is described as being about 5-foot-8, about 30 years old, French-speaking with an Arabic accent, and driving a four-door grey sedan, he said."

"4 women in NDG have been sexually assaulted recently in taxis: Police
Police say it's possible it could be the same attacker in all four cases.

"Police tell women to be careful in taxis

Earlier today, Montreal police urged women to be careful when using taxis. The SPVM says another woman was attacked downtown over the weekend by her taxi driver.

They recommend people travel in pairs after consuming alcohol, and that passengers ride in the backseat. They also say calling for a cab is safer than hailing one. As well, they recommend taking a photo of the driver's ID, which, by law, should be posted inside the car."

" Montreal police are warning residents to avoid taking taxis alone while under the influence, after a woman told police she was attacked in a cab last week.

The 26-year-old woman told Montreal radio station CJAD that she was in a cab after a night out with friends when the driver began making suggestive comments about her appearance, telling her she looked “sexy.”

Hailing a cab no longer requires standing outside on a busy street corner, desperately trying to catch someone’s attention. There are apps for that, but some are ruffling feathers in the industry.

“It happened very quickly, he jumped over to the back and I was attacked and assaulted,” she said, adding she managed to get out of the cab and call authorities.

Police say there have been four similar cases since March. The woman is the 17th person this year to file a report of sexual assault against a cab driver, or someone posing as a cab driver, police say. Last year, there were 29 incidents in Montreal where a driver assaulted a passenger".

There may be a variety of cab drivers committing the assaults. Keeping in mind, there is the possibility that some may be " fake" cab drivers. imo.

"Lafrenière acknowledged that the description investigators are working with is broad. The suspect is described as a male in his 30s, around five feet eight inches tall. He speaks in French with a strong accent.

"We're talking about 12,000 taxi drivers," he said.

"If we're talking about an incident that took place at the same location, for instance, people were waiting for a cab on a specific street and they could be targeting a group of individuals.

"But this is people (hailing) a cab downtown, so it's pretty large in terms of possible suspects."

He said police are hopeful more leads will come in now that the public is aware they are looking for information on the incidents".

" Montreal police are warning residents to avoid taking taxis alone while under the influence

That's a pretty extreme warning, considering the purpose of taxis. The alternatives are limited. Drunk driving is a criminal offense and public transit doesn't run at certain hours.

Cameras may help protect both cab drivers AND passengers..

"Taxi complaints down after six sex assault charges, union says"

" Since February 2013, six drivers have either been charged with sexual assault or are before the courts on charges.

One driver was convicted and will be in court for sentencing later this year. Two were acquitted, one agreed to a peace bond when the charges were dismissed, and a fifth is still before the courts. The sixth was charged in September.

Neufeld said routine complaints are down.

"You start chasing them on the small complaints, the big ones disappear," he said. "We've done a good job of informing everybody, there's messages… imploring them to behave."

On the heels of the sixth driver being charged, Neufeld said all local taxis would be equipped with surveillance cameras.

That is expected to be complete later this year."

Just want to mention, fwiw, I have been a frequent cab passenger and only on the rare occasion, have I felt uncomfortable.
These guys work very hard and are vulnerable to victimization, themselves. imo.

He jumped over the seat?

Most cabs in the US are retired police cars and they have a partition between the front and back seats (to prevent the driver from being robbed). A driver here could not just "jump over into the back seat" if it was a regular cab with a partition.
