The dog's name was Hamlet.

He lived at the house known as Big Pink, in the woods near Woodstock, and during the summer of 1967, responsibility for his care was shared by Bob Dylan and members of The Band. Hamlet was on the scene during the fruitful recording of The Basement Tapes, part of the storied atmosphere that led to one of the most vivid chapters in American music.

Anyone of a certain age recall the Dylan Renaissance of '75, Blood on the Tracks in Jan., official release of Basement Tapes in June, then the Rolling Thunder tour nipping hard on the heels of those two Events. (Saw the Bobber in Wichita with...wow, who-all...Joanie, Allen Ginsberg prowling backstage, um, Mick Ronson, T-Bone Burnett, maybe Ramblin' Jack Elliot, that whole lot, Scarlet Rivera on fiddle and more, more -- Bob Neuwirth etc.). "Good times" sounds a bit facile, though good times they were.
