23-year-old Steven Bruno killed his father so he could meet up with an Ohio girl he'd met on the Internet, an Orange County, Californian jury decided last week. Bruno, from Irvine, faces 40 years to life for the 2012 shooting, where he left 60-year-old Ernest Bruno's bleeding body in a locked office before stealing his cash, credit cards and car, and heading for Ohio. He never made it there and was eventually captured in Colorado.

Bruno's attorney argued it was fear of his father that led to the shooting, after the then 21-year-old had flunked a course at Mississippi State, and couldn't get a job back in CA. Prosecutors countered that Bruno was simply spoiled, and wanted his own way. He was found guilty of second-degree murder with an enhancement for discharging a firearm.

from your link:

"Ernest Bruno had cracked down on his son after he flunked out of a golf management program at Mississippi State University and couldn't get a job back home, his attorneys said."

I was thinking it was lawn grooming or something similar but it seems that the program he was taking was quite in depth -- business of PGA etc. -- maybe it was too much for the young man but still no excuse to kill his father MOO

From January 2015:

http://mynewsla.com/orange-county/2...to-40-years-for-shooting-killing-adopted-dad/

A 23-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 40 years to life in prison for killing his father in the victim’s Irvine condominium...

Bruno might have been convicted of a lesser charge of manslaughter had he put the gun down after the first shot left the victim “defenseless,” Goethals said. But he “issued the coup de grace by blowing his (father’s) brains out at point-blank range,” the judge said. “And there’s no justification for that.”
