Police say that Sunday, November 2nd marks the 40th anniversary of a Cobleskill cold case.

Investigators say 17 year old Katherine Kolodziej, a co-ed who was attending her first semester at SUNY Cobleskill, disappeared during the early morning of November 2, 1974. A three week manhunt with multiple agencies resulted in the discovery of Kolodziej's body in a field in Richmondville on Thanksgiving day in 1974. Investigators say she suffered numerous stab wounds, murdered at an unknown location, and left in the field.

Some discussion here suggests (but others here dispute):
and one of the episode was about the long-unsolved 1975 murder of Regina Marie Reynolds of Morrisville, New York. Her killer, Donald M. Sigsbee of Madison, New York, was only convicted a little over a decade ago by DNA. Sigsbee has since died. He is also a suspect of another unsolved 1974 murder, Katherine Kolodziej, another local unsolved murder but fruition is nigh impossible.

COBLESKILL (WRGB) - State Police are highlighting the cold case for Katherine Kolodziej from 1974. They want to remind the public of this case, and let them know it is still active, and they're still following leads.

Katherine Kolodziej was a SUNY Cobleskill student who disappeared on November 2, 1974. She was last seen leaving a bar in Cobleskill and getting into a yellow Volkswagen.

Her body was found 26 days later, stabbed and partially clothed, just five miles from the SUNY Cobleskill campus.
Now more than 40 years later, State Police say they're still soliciting tips and following leads.

Tuesday, they'll hold a news conference at a new billboard on State Route 7 in Cobleskill, near the campus. And State Police will feature the cold case on their Facebook page.

Bumping for Kathy

Family holds out hope for justice

"Nearly five decades have passed since the body of SUNY Cobleskill student Katherine “Kathy” Kolodziej was found on Thanksgiving Day in 1974, but New York State Police investigator David Ayers told Dateline he isn’t about to let Kathy’s killer get away."

New York State Police refuse to give up on 1974 cold case murder of Cobleskill student Kathy Kolodziej

Probably nothing to it, but have noticed in several cases involving (presumably) sexually motivated murders, one red shoe seems to be left behind. Cannot immediately recall them all, but news anchor Jodi H. comes to mind.
Does red clothing and/or shoes trigger certain types of perps?imo, speculation.

From link..
''After weeks of searches by law enforcement, college security and hundreds of volunteers, police were alerted to a red shoe found near Cross Hill Road in Richmondville the day before Thanksgiving, Investigator Ayers told Dateline. But as law enforcement organized a search in the area the next day, a hunting party alerted them to their grim discovery.

On November 28, 1974, Kathy’s body was found in a field on MacDonald Road in Richmondville, New York. Investigator Ayers told Dateline a deer hunter had spotted an article of clothing, a piece of red cloth, in the distance through binoculars and alerted police, knowing that a missing teen was last seen wearing a red coat.

Kathy’s naked body, found on a low rock wall, was covered by the red coat draped over her like a blanket, Ayers said. She had been stabbed several times, he added.''

Kathy, 17, was out with friends at The Vault, a local bar in the Village of Cobleskill, New York, on November 2, 1974. She declined a ride back to campus with her friends and decided to stay at the bar a little while longer.''

''Ayers told Dateline that Kathy was last seen around 1:30 a.m. leaving the bar and crossing the street, presumably headed back to campus, which he said was about a mile away. It was the last time she was seen alive.

Just hours earlier, Kathy’s mother, Hattie Kolodziej, had spoken with her daughter, asking her not to go out, to instead stay home and study, Kathy’s cousin, Vicki Szydlowski told Dateline.

“She was a good kid,” Vicki said. “But it was a Friday night and she wanted to go out with her friends to the local bar. It was a small community, everybody knew everybody and that’s just what we all did back then.”

*In 1974, 17-year-old Katherine Kolodziej, a SUNY Cobleskill student, was murdered. Take a look back at our 2011 coverage of this cold case, when we spoke with former Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond, who was a New York State Trooper on duty the night Kolodziej went missing. As of November 15, 2023, State Police say they're still investigating her death, and they're "resolved" to solve the crime.Full story: https://cbs6albany.com/news/local/col...

''Kathy was originally from Long Island and attended SUNY Cobleskill at the time of her murder. Her Long Island family is still searching for answers after she was murdered on Halloween night in 1974.

On Monday night a vigil was held for Kolodziej in hopes of generating new leads. Her cousins and friends were in attendance, alongside those who did not know her but were moved by her story and are still worried about her case.

Maria Kolodziej said Kathy’s mother had a feeling Kathy was dead when they initially heard she was missing. They found out she died on Thanksgiving, her parents were devastated.

“He was so heartbroken that the neighbors actually heard him crying too. They all heard them crying and screaming and everything. It was horrific,” said Maria.''

''Maria said her family struggled to make ends meet and they would often get Kathy’s hand me downs. She said Kathy’s parents visited Poland to adopt a child in 1975 but when they saw her in Kathy’s old dress they had to adopt her and her sister.

Maria said her family had no electricity in Poland and they were grateful for the opportunity to move to the U.S. But they witnessed the pain and sorrow felt by two parents who mourned the loss of their only child up close. The parents have since passed and have left Maria to carry on Kathy’s memory.''

Davignon said they are re-evaluating evidence in hopes that it will produce something useful.

“There’s a lot of evidence taken on this case especially, and it’s been analyzed multiple times, and the more you analyze it, obviously, it becomes degraded and you may not be able to utilize it again or it’s something we can and that’s kind of where we are right now,” said Davignon.

He said they will be re-submitting that evidence to be analyzed in the coming weeks.''
