HARTFORD, Conn. -- A four-day search was suspended late Saturday night for a Greenwich man who went missing from a honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean, a spokeswoman for the cruise line said.

George Smith had been on a 12-night cruise, but was discovered missing when the ship docked at the Kusadasi island in the Aegean region of Turkey July 5.

I heard this on Dan Abrams tonight. They think that he fell overboard???? It was said that there was something that looked like blood on a lifeboat but that hasn't been a "for sure" yet.

When someone thought there was blood on the lifeboat they did a search of the ship and found that George Smith was the only person missing. They did find his wife. I want to know where they found his wife and where she thought her husband was. Did this man have a lot of life insurance????????

I will never understand how a person can fall overboard on a cruise ship?? I can see if the person wants to go over the side but as far as I remember the ships are so safe as far as falling overboard.

This just sounds to strange. I guess the ship had been stopped at some port and the person Dan was talking to said that there is the possibility that the man could have gotten off and not gotten back on the ship.

We've heard some real strange stories about people disappearing on cruise ships.

George Smith had been on a 12-night cruise, and went missing somewhere between Greece and Turkey. He was missing when the ship docked at the Aegean resort of Kusadasi.

Smith and his wife had been drinking heavily and had been gambling at the ship's casino before his disappearance, an official from the Kusadasi prosecutor's office, told The Associated Press Tuesday.
His wife woke up the next morning and went to the gym, not noticing that her husband was missing, he said. Smith was reported missing after cleaners found blood stains in the cabin and alerted the ship's captain, he said.

If they are from Greenwich I bet he does. They are generally loaded there (JMO of course).

I watched the story on the news last night and it sounded like his family are quite well off. They own liquor stores or something like that. The police say that everyone they talk to says what a nice man this guy is.

On the news they talked about something that looked like blood on a life boat. You know how the life boats are upside down on the cruise ships. The blood or whatever was on the bottom of the lifeboat. They didn't say anything about blood being found in the cabin. That is why they thought he may have fallen overboard....blood on the lifeboat or what looked like blood.

Blood in the cabin would tell a different story. I hope they are taking a good long look at the new bride. The whole story sounds odd. How can you get up and not notice blood in your room....the steward didn't have a problem seeing it....if this story is true. I can understand the bride not being alarmed if her hubby wasn't in the room when she woke up....he could have gone to get coffee or something. Although honeymooners usually stick pretty close to each other and spend a little time in bed together in the morning!!!!!!

If I were this man's parents I would be checking out life insurance to see if he had recently gotten some...how much... etc. I wonder how well the family knows the bride and how long this couple knew each other. I'm suspicious because this whole thing is really strange.
 
Bloodstains inside a cruise ship cabin and a bloody handprint on an outside balcony railing are the few scarce clues in the mysterious disappearance of a Greenwich man from a Mediterranean cruise ship a week ago, a Turkish official said yesterday.

"It seems that the man might have fallen from the room's balcony," an official from the Kusadasi prosecutor's office said. "But at this time, there is not enough evidence to say for sure that this was an accident or a crime."

George Allen Smith IV, 26, who grew up in Glenville and ran the Cos Cob Liquor store with his father, disappeared July 5 from a 12-day honeymoon cruise of the Mediterranean.

Both the FBI and Turkish authorities said they are investigating the disappearance, which was discovered while the ship was docked in Turkey, but may have occurred hours earlier when the ship was sailing in Greek waters.

Cruise and FBI officials

have declined to confirm the presence of bloodstains, citing the ongoing investigation. The families of Smith and his wife have declined to comment.

i have to say that to me her story makes no sense. even in my younger days if i had been "drinking heavily" i would certainly not be able to go to the gym the next morning. i would be in bed with a bad hang-over!

they profiled this on CC Live today on CTV but i had to run an errand and missed it! if anyone saw this, and if her program added anything to what has already been posted, please elaborate here. her promo was the first i had heard of this case, but i am thinking foul play. :( thanks.

I agree, night of heavy drinking, she certainly wouldn't be up early heading to the gym! On CC there was mention that possibly an ex boyfriend of the bride was on the cruise as well, but they are looking into that further. Not much new said....something is not right!
 
I saw a little bit of this on CC tonight and it was the first I had heard of it. My gut reaction was "something is rotten in Denmark". I heard about blood being found on a lifeboat, then about stewards finding blood in the room. It really caught my attention when they mentioned a rumor that a former boyfriend of the bride was onboard. What bride wakes up in the morning, takes off for the gyum, and doesn't even notice her husband is not in the room?

Please tell me this is not another case of "no body, no crime".
 
On the news today it said that they are also checking into the husbands life insurance policies. Also they said that the railing around the balcony was around 4-5 ft high. I just don't buy someone drunk going out on the balcony of a ship and leaning over far enough to fall overboard. They were going to check the awning below the balcony...there was blood there too...and see if a body hit that awning would it bounce and where would it end up.

I think they need to take a good long look at the couple's relationship and who would benefit if he died.

"We were all very surprised," said Paul Haber, 45, a Hollidaysburg, Pa., school psychologist who was on the cruise with his wife and two teenage children. "We were kind of surprised that we were allowed to get off the ship. Nobody was getting interviewed."

One passenger from Canada talked of hearing something in the middle of the night, Bruck said.

"She heard a thump, a loud noise," she said. "She said to her husband, 'Something happened.' "

Justin Carriello, 26, who grew up a mile from Smith's house and who now works as a travel agent, said he is disturbed that -- considering the number of people and amount surveillance equipment on ships -- authorities don't know more about what happened.

"That's what is really bothering me," he said. "They should know already what's going on."

mysteriew thanks for this info. i think the blood evidence and the sound of the thud pretty much waxes it for me that this man met with foul play. i think the wife in involved big time.
 
This was on A Current Affair tonight, first I had heard of it.... something is definitely NOT right here..... a couple on their honeymoon, and she wakes up, goes to the gym, and doesn't even notice he's not there?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? No way. Especially not on a honeymoon trip, not ever. :snooty:
 
Yeah, the waking up and not even realizing your new hubby is not there is quite odd.

I do have a friend who drinks very heavily, daily, and he does get up early, early in the morning, hangover or not, and works out usually followed by yardwork before he begins his day. He states it helps him to "sweat it out" (the alcohol that is). So, I guess I'm thinking anything is possible. My personal choice would probably be to stay in bed or order a Bloody Mary (hair of the dog...:D ).

Another thought is that maybe he had the dry heeves (sp?) and was leaning way to far over the railing and fell.
Or, being on a cruise ship, maybe, being extremely drunk, he got up on the rail such as the "I'm the king of the world" number (Titanic movie) and merely slipped and fell.

One odd statement I read was that the wife thought he may be with friends. Huh? Who takes friends on their honeymoon? Weird. Then again, maybe she was referring to friends they met on the cruise.

Anyway you look at it...it doesn't look good.

George Smith Sr. and his wife, Maureen, couldn't have been happier about the arrival of their daughter Bree's son. They showed the baby off to family, friends and neighbors at their Byram, Conn., home, near Greenwich.

Nor was that the only good news. The 26-year- old George Jr.'s marriage to college sweetheart Jennifer Hagel on June 25 had delighted the Smith clan.

Plus, George Sr. was set to retire and turn his upscale liquor-store business in neighboring Cos Cob over to his son, a strapping former Greenwich High football player planning to boost sales via the Internet — once he'd returned from his honeymoon.

I'ld say with a handprint, they have a great chance of matching it to someone involved, be it the missing or the responsible party.

J Bird, thanks for posting that article. i am also wondering why in the world the wife would get up and go to the gym if there were bloodstains in the room. i am venture to guess she was not sleeping in her gym clothes and therefore would need to move about the cabin to gather her things and dress to go to the gym and would see the bloodstains. and then on top of that no husband. and she still goes to the gym!!?? i think she will be implicated in this murder.
 
I don't understand why the wife and family is declining to speak. Why wouldn't you be screaming for people to look at your son's picture or having his photo on the news, etc., to hopefully catch the attention of someone on that cruise ship that might have a clue as to his last whereabouts, etc.
 
If the seas were rough that night, he could have gone out on the balcony, fallen and slipped through the rails easily. I also think the dry heaves is a strong possibility. When people are that sick from drinking, their equilibrium is way off.
