Missing man seemed ‘happy, normal’ in chat just hours before vanishing

....

The day before he disappeared, he'd worked at an east end pizza store, joined his girlfriend for a quick dinner, and then went out to meet some friends for coffee – and never came back.

He didn't disappear at first – he'd planned to meet up later that evening, but called to say his friend's car had a flat and he'd be staying the night and would see her the next day.

She says Harman did not talk to her much about this friend, and she has only met him two or three times, but doesn't really know him.

That night she and Harman video chatted with each other for 90 minutes; Harman at his friend's house, she at hers.

"There was nothing unusual, he was happy. We talked like normal. He showed his friends dog to me – he's a big fan of dogs."

She finally begged off the call at 1:30 a.m. and says they exchanged a few more texts with his last arriving at 2 a.m. saying good night and that they would meet up later that day.

His phone has gone to voice mail ever since. Her texts go unanswered.

"He always replies, he always picks up," his girlfriend says.

His Facebook activity – so prolific it was almost a standing joke between them – suddenly stopped. So too did his daily or twice daily calls home to his parents and little sister in India.

That Monday morning, when he suddenly wasn't doing those things she texted his friend, who called her that afternoon, surprised, and said he had dropped Harman off earlier that morning.

Police have interviewed his friend and confirmed Harman was there on the night of Oct. 26 and into the next morning. They say they are trying to corroborate another sighting about 9:30 a.m. on the 27th in Stoney Creek not far from Harman's home on Amy Lane.

....

His disappearance is being investigated by the homicide squad, and police are urging anyone with information on Singh's whereabouts are asked to call Detective Andrea Richard at 905-546-4067 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Homicide cops probing disappearance of Hamilton teen

The unusual circumstances surrounding the vanishing of a 19-year-old has prompted the Hamilton Police homicide unit to take over the investigation.

Det.-Sgt. Joe Stewart is now the lead officer on what he calls Harmanjit Singh’s “very suspicious” disappearance.

“We’re hoping for the positive outcome but we have to be objective and be realistic as well,” Stewart said Thursday.

Singh was last seen around 9 a.m. on Oct. 27 by someone who knows him and saw him in the front passenger seat of a white SUV in the area of Grandville Ave. and Delawana Dr.

“He did not appear to be in any distress,” Stewart said. Police are looking to corroborate this sighting.

....

“At this time, we can’t rule out anything,” he said.

He is described as East Indian, around 5-foot-9 with a medium build and spiked black hair. He was last seen dressed in a white T-shirt, red baseball cap with letters, grey headband, grey sweatpants, slippers, and a shiny black Adidas jacket.

Anyone with information can call Det. Andrea Richard at 905-546-4067 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Sixteen days after a Stoney Creek man was reported missing, Hamilton police forensic experts have descended on the house that was the scene of his last confirmed sighting. They expect to be there for days. "I can confirm that we have obtained a judicial warrant to search" the Hannon Crescent home, homicide Det. Sgt. Joe Stewart said Wednesday evening.

Stewart said he expected police will be in the home "over the next several days using state of the art forensic equipment and techniques … in an attempt to determine what has happened to Mr. Harmanjit Singh."

Hamilton Police forensics team examine house in Singh disappearance
Posted: November 13, 2014 08:14:37 AM | Last updated: November 13, 2014 10:41:00 PM

Hamilton police are now focusing on one house in the investigation into the disappearance of a 19 year old from East Hamilton.
....
They say that they will be there through the day Friday while the gather evidence. But they would not go into detail as to what they were looking for. We know there have been no arrests and still no sign of Harmanjit Singh.

Over the past 24 hours, the police have focused their attention on the house at 57 Hannon Crescent on the East Mountain. While it’s related to the disappearance of 19 year old Harmanjit Singh, according to neighbors, this is not the first time police have been here.

Josie Aubert: In August, something happened. There was a lot of police cars that were here in August.
....
Police say that while they may have been to the house before, the address at 57 Hannon is not one that was known to them. The case was transferred to homicide last week and tonight, members of the Singh family are coming to Hamilton in order to give a DNA sample. But lead investigator Detective Sergeant Joe Stewart says that collecting DNA does not mean that Harmanjit is dead: “It can also be used to identify where a person has been or how they have interacted in their environment.”
....
He said the police have executed multiple warrants.

Nearly 17 days after he went missing, police say they still have no confirmed sightings of a missing Mohawk College grad after a friend saw and spoke to him on the morning of Oct. 28.

Homicide Det. Sgt. Joe Stewart said Tuesday evening that police have "no significant developments" in the hunt for 19-year-old Harmanjit Singh.

The young visa student, who just graduated from a Mohawk certificate program and obtained a work permit, vanished after spending the evening with a friend.

Due to the suspicious nature of Singh's sudden and unexplained disappearance, the case was given to Hamilton homicide squad. Last week police forensic specialists spent two days combing through the Hannon Crescent home where Singh was last known to have spent the night.

Singh spent 90 minutes in a video chat with his girlfriend from that home late on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 27, and the two exchanged texts until 2 a.m. on the Monday. He was behaving normally during the conversation, she has said.

Armed with a search warrant, police descended on the home 10 days later. “We’re finished (there) — that wrapped up on Friday,” Stewart confirmed.

However, he said he “cannot discuss what we were searching for or what was found.”

Stewart did squelch rumours about a possible second sighting captured on video, said to have occurred as much as 36 hours after the last time Singh was seen.

“We have information from people who believe they have seen him, based on the description and the photo we released, but we have not been able to confirm any of them,” he said.

Family, police silent on missing man
Detectives do house searches, seize vehicle, as investigation of Harmanjit Singh continues
Hamilton Spectator
By Bill Dunphy

The mystery surrounding the Oct. 27 disappearance of Harmanjit Singh took a sudden, and possibly tragic, turn Monday evening as the missing man's family was summoned to police headquarters for an emergency meeting.

Emerging an hour later, Singh's uncle said he could not comment.

A sombre Sunny Chahal would only say they were "strictly advised not to talk to the media."

....

Singh's presence at the Hannon Crescent home of his friend, Dashminder Deol, was confirmed by police and by Singh's girlfriend who said she talked with him on a video chat for 90 minutes that night while Singh was at the house.

Deol told police and the family that early the next morning, he dropped Singh off at a plaza on Centennial Parkway a block from the Stoney Creek townhouse which Singh shared with three others. There was also a sighting of Singh in that same neighbourhood about two hours after that drop off.

But late last week The Spectator learned that this sighting proved to be a case of mistaken identity and Singh's friends say police have now interviewed the individual mistaken for Singh.

....

Investigators also seized and searched the Ford Edge SUV that Deol drove to pick Singh up on that Sunday evening and which he said he used to drive Singh back home on the Monday morning.

The police notified the SUV's owner that their forensic technicians had finished processing the vehicle and he was able to retrieve it from the pound about a week ago.

Human remains found, police probing connection to Harmanjit Singh
Harmanjit Singh believed to have attended residence on Hannon Cres. before he disappeared

CBC News Posted: Nov 25, 2014 9:27 AM ET Last Updated: Nov 25, 2014 12:10 PM ET

Hamilton police have recovered human remains in Stoney Creek, and investigators say they “cannot exclude” that the remains may be those of Harmanjit Singh, who went missing last month.

....

A person walking in the area had seen the body and called police.

The body was in “advanced stages of decomposition,” police say, so it isn’t possible to concretely identify it at this time.

“A secondary means of identification such as DNA comparison will have to be undertaken,” a police news release reads.

Those tests could “take several weeks,” police say. A post mortem examination to figure out the cause of death is scheduled for Tuesday.

Singh’s family was called in to Hamilton police station Monday night so that they could be given the news that a body was found, police spokesperson Debbie McGreal-Dinning said.

That’s the usual protocol police undertake when a body is found that could match the description of an outstanding missing person, she said.

“We can’t say for sure it’s their son … but it could be, so we have to go through the proper steps,” she said.

I hope it's not him, and I hope it is him so that at least his family will know where he is. 'Could take several weeks' to identify the remains?? Very weird case.. imho. I guess we continue to wait for some kind of news.

I understand waiting to inform the public until a certain identification is made

Family of missing man to view body found in Stoney Creek basin
1 hour ago |
Hamilton Spectator
By Bill Dunphy

The family of a missing Stoney Creek man will be allowed to view a body discovered in a lakeshore flood basin Monday morning.

....

The viewing is slated to take place Tuesday afternoon, following an autopsy. Police have said the body was discovered in a basin by a pedestrian walking in the area of Watercrest Drive and Seabreeze Crescent in Stoney Creek. The remains were "in an advanced state of decomposition" which has made identification difficult.

....

Police confirmed for them that the body was that of a south Asian male. Singh is from the Punjab state in India.

Chahal said police asked the family about identifying marks – and were provided with several – but learned this morning those were not conclusive.

"They told me this morning that they haven't been able to identify any of the signs we gave them (a childhood scar and some cosmetic surgery), I don't know, maybe because of the decomposition."

Clothing is not considered a reliable identifier, police told Chahal

....

Regardless of the viewing, police have said they will rely on a DNA comparison to be absolutely certain of any identification, a process that could take weeks. Toxicology tests – which can assist in assessing the cause of death – will also take weeks.

I wonder if LE found HS's cellphone in the home or if it was with his person (or neither). I wonder why the 'friend' picked him up at 11pm on a Sunday night, seems late. And after he went to the 'friend's' house, why he would spend 90 minutes texting his girlfriend instead of visiting with said 'friend'. How horrible to think his family sent him here to get an education, and he ends up this way. When I read that a body had been found, I wondered if it could possibly be a suicide, but then I thought, if one is going to kill themselves by drowning, then they wouldn't do it in a flood basin.
