Detroit's police chief was troubled and visibly frustrated Saturday night. He mentioned this is the third incident in the past few weeks where a child was killed when they got access to a weapon.

No charges have yet been filed. Police told Local 4 News there's no law specifying how old a child must be to be left home alone. The issue, however, is that young kids were able to get access to a deadly weapon.

Detroit — Preliminary reports from an autopsy conducted on a 9-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself on Saturday has concluded that he died of a gunshot wound.

“There is no ruling ... as they are investigating the case,” Wayne County Medical Examiner spokeswoman Mary Mazur said Monday. “He has not been formally identified ... so we cannot release his name at this time.”

The incident happened about 5 p.m. Saturday in the 16100 block of Northlawn. The boy was with two other children at the time — ages 13 and 10.

Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody said the boy found a gun, “was playing with it and shot himself, sustaining a fatal wound.”

It is unclear how the boy got the weapon or why no one appeared to be watching the children.

“There are no charges pending right now and we don’t anticipate any,” Woody said.

IDK, I think it's a crime to allow kids to shoot themselves anyhow...

No charges??? So it's OK to leave a gun and ammo so kids can get access to it???

This is the third incident in the city the past few weeks!

<shakeshead>

I don't live in a country where guns are more freely legal but totally agree with the above poster. A 9 year old not be able to access a gun and charges should be due....as I said though I don't know the ins and outs of the gun laws but this is just CRAZY. It maddens me.

Rest in peace :(

And we have another....
