Couple Disappears From Home
Reggie and Carol Sumner

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- All seems well in the home of 62-year-old Reggie and Carol Sumner, but, the high school sweet hearts who drifted apart and fell in love later in life, have police, family and friends worried.

Mrs. Sumner's daughter Rhonda Bronson says, "It's as if they just vanished out of thin air."

She talks to her mother everyday from her home in Charleston, South Carolina, but, hasn't heard from her since last week.

She drove all the way down to Jacksonville to see what was going on. What she found was a normal looking house with lights still on and no sign of foul play.

"There was still pots and pans of food on the stove," said Bronson.

It gets even stranger, says Mr. Sumner's sisters. The couples beloved dog Mikey was home alone. He's a dog that Mrs. Sumner didn't even leave alone while visiting her sick husband in the hospital.

"When I went to see him [in the hospital], Mikey was in the bed with him. So they allowed the dog to come in. The dog went everywhere he went," said his sister Alma Jean Clark.

Police found the couples car late Tuesday night in a wooded area in Baker County, but, no sign of the couple.

The family is asking that if anyone has any information on the couple to please call police.

You can leave an anonymous tip with our partners, First Coast Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS. You could be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.

This doesn't sound very good. Like maybe someone came into the home, forced them into the car and took them out and murdered them. I wonder if they had "friends" or someone who would normally stop in to see them since there did not appear to be anything out of the ordinary at the home. Was there any money missing from the home or had they made any recent bank withdrawals?

I'm thinking foul play. Some sicko robbed the poor handicapped couple, and stole their car. Missing since Friday, no less. Another psycho is on the loose. Alert the media. I hadn't seen anything about this. Thanks for posting it fourboys.

Police Search For Handicapped Couple After Car Found 20 Miles Away

POSTED: July 13, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police searched woods near downtown Jacksonville Wednesday for a disabled couple who have not been seen since last week.

Missing are Carol Alford Sumner and her husband, James Reginald Sumner, both 61. Police said both are physically handicapped.

The search was centered near the couple's St. Nicholas home, said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Rick Wood. The couple's 1993 Lincoln Town Car was recovered Tuesday night in Baker County.

Police did not release details what they found in the car, which was towed to a police impound lot, where it will be searched for clues to what happened to the couple. Police said there was no sighting of the couple in Baker County.

The couple's daughter, Rhonda Branson, 29, of Hollywood, S.C., called police Sunday after being unable to reach her parents by telephone since Friday. That's the day neighbors say they last saw Carol Sumner as she pulled into her driveway.

A police officer checked out the house Sunday and found the rear door open, but said he saw no evidence of foul play. Missing-persons detectives now call the Sumners' disappearance suspicious and organized a search of the couple's neighborhood by about 40 officers on foot, horseback and with K-9 officers Wednesday morning.

On Monday, Branson drove to Jacksonville, where she found the couple's dog, Mikey, inside the house, food on the stove, and the couple's medication and a cell phone still in the house.

"Everything so left as it is, I believe they were either taken or lured," Branson said. "They are very trusting."

She told police it was out of character for her parents to leave home without telling anyone.

Carol Sumner is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for liver cancer. She also uses a cane to help her walk. Reggie Sumner requires daily injections of insulin to suppress diabetes and uses a wheelchair to get around.

The cane, wheelchair and insulin are still in the house.

This is not the first time Carol Sumner's life has been in doubt. She was shot seven times by her first husband -- who then killed himself -- back in 1987. She lived, but not without complications.

"She contracted hepatitis C from a blood transfusion," Branson said. "From that, she's gotten cirrhosis, which turned into stage 1 liver cancer. She was treated for that. She has no medicines and she's very ill, and her husband is very ill as well."

Anyone with any information about the Sumners is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at (904) 630-0500 or Crimestoppers at (888) 277-TIPS.

Police: Missing Jacksonville couple believed buried in Georgia

The Associated Press
July 15. 2005

The bodies of a missing Florida couple are believed to be buried in a shallow grave in southern Georgia, and an 18-year-old has been charged with their abduction and murder, police said Friday.

Investigators will begin exhuming the grave in Charlton County, Ga., on Saturday, looking for the bodies of James Reginald Sumner and Carol Alford Sumner, both 61.

The Jacksonville couple had not been seen or heard form since last Friday. Charlton County is just across the state line from northeast Florida.

Bruce Nixon, of McClenney, was arrested and charged with murder, abduction and robbery of the Sumners, said Assistant Chief Rick Graham of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Nixon was being held without bond at the Duval County jail.

Three suspects charged with credit card fraud in Charleston, S.C., are also suspected in this crime, Graham said. There names weren't released.

The Sumners recently moved to Jacksonville from Charleston, he said.

"Some of the suspects were known to the victims" Graham said. "These crimes were not .. a random act of violence."

Graham declined to release additional information, citing the ongoing investigation.

The Sumners' car was found in Baker County, the county west of Jacksonville where Nixon lives.

The couple disappeared from their brick home Friday without taking needed medications, cell phone or telling anyone where they had gone, according to police. Food was left on the stove, according to a police report.

On Sunday, police were asked to check the house found a back door open but no sign of foul play.

When Carol Sumner's daughter, Rhonda Branson, arrived from South Carolina Monday to check on her parents she found the couple's dog, Mikey, alone inside, police said.

Branson released a statement Friday on behalf of the family, saying they were saddened by the discovery.

"They are now looking for justice to be served against the person or persons who took the lives" of the Sumners, the statement said.

That's just sooo sad. If one or more of those heathens knew the couple, they must have gone to Florida for the sole purpose of robbing and killing that poor couple. Hell is going to bust wide open soon, there won't be room for all the evil people that seem to be headed there!

A Jacksonville couple whose bodies were found in a shallow grave in southern Georgia were buried alive, police said Thursday.

Ken Jefferson, a spokesman for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, said the official cause of the deaths of Carol and James "Reggie" Sumner, both 61, was mechanical asphyxiation, an action which stops a person from breathing normally.

"It was result of the sand being on them," Jefferson said.

Their bodies were found in a shallow grave Saturday morning, eight days after they were last seen. Officials have not released any details on the condition of the bodies, including whether they were bound. http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=63034

a elderly couple is robbed and buried alive by a group of young people that they had tried to help. the kids are on death row including a girl who is the only woman on death row in Florida.
that is a horrible story. reminds me of the Hawks killed her in Newport beach to steal their yacht. Young people tied them to the anchor and dropped them alive into the Pacific.

This is horrifying. It makes me feel sick to my stomach to think of how this couple died. :furious: How can one human being (or 4 in this case) do that to another? :furious:

Thanks for giving this story a thread, sherri. This case happened to a couple who lived in my hometown, Charleston, and I have followed it for a while. Unimagineable brutality.

This horrific crime was shown on ID's My Worst Nightmare today so I had to go find it on WS.
In researching, I found that Tiffany Cole had been trying to appeal her death sentence as late as 2015. Best I can determine, this appeal was also denied. The linked transcript for that appeal in the second link is a very interesting read.

A woman on Florida's death row will ask the Florida Supreme Court to throw out her conviction and death sentence this week for robbing, kidnapping and burying a disabled Jacksonville couple alive.
