A Willamette University student was arrested on a charge of murder in connection with a body found near D and Winter streets NE Wednesday morning. Willamette officials confirm that Beau W. Smith, 22, is currently enrolled as a student at Willamette. He is also the wide receiver for the Willamette Bearcats football team, according to the school's website. The senior majoring in chemistry was arrested in the murder investigation of 66-year-old Michael Hampshire.

Salem Police closed several roads near state buildings downtown after they found Hampshire's body. According to Lt. Dave Okada, a passerby called police at 3:42 a.m and reported the body was lying on property near the intersection.

Strange to see a 22 college student killing a 66 year old man. Possible explanation anyone?

Wonder what happened???? It just sounds crazy. Willamette is a very good private school.

So strange. Chemistry majors are usually quite intelligent and studious. You can't fake that major. And if he is playing football and majoring in chemistry, he was probably not abusing drugs. the team is going to do drug tests pretty routinely and he probably wouldn't chance it.

I am leaning more towards personal/emotional relationship of some kind?

Daily Mail (not always accurate) quotes a friend of the victim saying he liked to take walks in the neighborhood at night when he had trouble sleeping.

The victim was a retired aircraft mechanic who liked to work on home remodeling projects. He also volunteered at the local soup kitchen. Hard to say what happened - somewhat cranky older guy who can still fight has a "get off my lawn" moment with an athletic young college student, who possibly had been out partying. Not to say its the case here, but many of these young college athletes take steroids....Tempers must have gotten out of hand. Such a shame for both men.

Great find!

That arrest is quite recent!

I hate to jump to conclusions... But I wonder if the arrest/trespassing/menace had anything to do with Beau?

I would love to get a peek at the arrest warrant/report!
