NEWAYGO CO. -- New tips reported to the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office are turning a missing person case from 2005 into a homicide investigation.

Margaret Maureen Heuser was 44-years-old when she was reported missing to the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office in August, 2005. Officials said she was last seen the night of July 19, 2005.

After forming a task force to try and gather new information on Heuser's disappearance, tips from the public have officials focusing on several Oceana County lakes.

A dive operation started Thursday in Oceana County near Walkerville. Divers from the Michigan State Police, Oceana County Sheriff's Office, and Newaygo County Sheriff's Office are diving several lakes as well as using side scan sonar equipment in an attempt to locate Heuser's remains. Investigators are planning more dives in the future in other lakes.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call Silent Observer at 231-652-1121, Newaygo County Sheriff's Office at 231-689-7303 or the Michigan State Police Hart Post at 231-873-2171.

A law enforcement dive team was actively searching bodies of water in Oceana County Thursday, Nov. 13 for what police are saying are the remains of a Newaygo County woman who disappeared the night of July 19, 2005.
Margaret Maureen Heuser was reported missing to the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office in August 2005, according to a Newaygo County Sheriff's Office press release.

Detectives from the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office, Oceana County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police are actively investigating the case in hopes to locate Heuser's body and the person or persons responsible for her alleged homicide. Tips from the public led the dive operation to bodies of water in Oceana County near the village of Walkerville, the press release stated.

Authorities years ago said Heuser had taken a ride home from a bar in Crystal Valley the night of July 19, 2005, and hadn't been seen since.

A police dive-team search last week of two Oceana County lakes found no trace of a Newaygo County woman missing since 2005, but searches of the area haven't ended...

"We did not find anything in the lakes," Mercer said. "We are planning future dives in a couple more lakes in that area, maybe not until spring because of the weather."

Mercer said police have active suspects, whom he declined to name.

Heuser’s husband, whom she was separated from at the time, reportedly told police that she called and asked him to pick her up from a bar in Hesperia, because her boyfriend’s truck had run out of gas. He refused, and she got a ride home with someone else. The husband said she called him two hours later, and that was the last time he heard from her.

Margaret was reported missing on August 10. Her car was found in her driveway, burned out. She is presumed to be the victim of a homicide.

Police recently got a tip that her body may have been put in a barrel and dumped in a lake.

Bump.

There is an interesting comment from a relative on http://www.delayedjustice.com/?page_id=1610 from 2011. They state openly that they know the person responsible, her boyfriend, and that LE were not interested (and actually obstructive) in the early days. They also mention that he was a member of a bikers club, the Bitely Boys, and that he has since disappeared, probably to his home state of Texas. Given that this information was out there in 2011 the obvious question is what LE have done to trace and question the boyfriend and what they have done to lean on the members of the Bitely Boys for information. The Bitely Boys are a slightly unusual biker group as they seem to be a broader based community group focused on charity work, but that does not mean they do not know about this case (or at least where their ex-member is to be found).

Details of Disappearance

Heuser was last seen at her White Cloud, Michigan home on July 20, 2005. Her husband, whom she was separated from, stated she called and asked him to pick her up from a bar in Hesperia, Michigan, as her boyfriend's truck had run out of gasoline. Heuser's husband refused to pick her up, and she got a ride home from someone else.

She called her husband back two hours later, and this is the last time he heard from her. Heuser wasn't reported missing until August 10. After her disappearance, her car was found burned in the driveway of her residence. Authorities have stated the fire was suspicious. There was no sign of her or her body in the vehicle.

Heuser and her husband have a son together and she also has two adult children from a previous marriage. Her family described her as a good parent who would not have abandoned her family. Heuser's youngest son was living with her husband at the time she vanished, but she had visitation.

Police are investigating Heuser's case as a homicide. In 2014, they began searching several local lakes for her body; they got tips that her body was placed in a barrel and the barrel dumped in a lake. Her disappearance remains unsolved.
