36-year-old Marilyn Massyn from Krugersdorp left Gauteng at the end of October and travelled to Abu Dhabi with her friend. SA officials are still trying to establish how and when she reached Japan, and why she is being held.

'The department's spokesman Nelson Kgwete said, “Officials in our mission are keeping contact with the woman’s family and are rendering constant assistance.'

so is her son with his father?

I'm thinking this is a drug smuggling ... she went away with a friend but for only 4 days to Japan? that's a short trip considering it takes about 9 hours from SA to UAE and another good 10+ hours to Japan - factor in the time differences (7 hours collectively) and probably delays in connections, that's 1 1/2 days gone to destination travel & jetlag - then to do it all over again on return trip leaves 2 days vacation???

maybe it was a business trip or maybe she was deceived into thinking it was a business trip but my hunch is this will turn out to be smuggling-related

ETA: just saw that her son is in boarding school

From your link, King Charles;

'Shortly after entering Japan through an airport, Massyn was arrested for drug-related charges, but at the time of going to print, no formal charges had been laid against her.

Japanese police and authorities are investigating the case.'

Strange that Japanese authorities still haven't confirmed any charges, despite her being held for so long, but I've no idea how judicial system works there.

I too don't know anything about Japan's judicial system, but have been looking at this link...

It doesn't seem to give any info on why a person would be detained without confirming charges.

I was wondering if it is drug related charges as it appears that her mother is awaiting for Consular officials to get back to her. (Taking a long time though)
As she was originally only supposed to be going to Abu Dhabi I wonder if the trip to Japan was a last minute decision. If so she would have needed a visa in advance to enter into Japan as a tourist.

From what I can gather they have a strict policy at immigrations. I know it's a long shot but there is no proof it is drugs related as yet. Or perhaps it's just me foolish to hope it is something not as sinister as being a drug mule.
