Police investigate after body of baby found on the beach — Maroubra

GRAVE concerns are held for the mother of a baby found dead at Maroubra beach in Sydney’s east on Sunday morning.

Police have appealed for the parents of the newborn - discovered naked only 30cm below the soft sand and too decomposed to determine its age or gender - to come forward.

Children find baby's body while playing on Maroubra Beach in Sydney

Police forensics officers have combed an area of Sydney's South Maroubra Beach where two young boys found the badly decomposed body of a baby.

The two boys, aged six and seven, were digging in the dunes at the south end of the beach when they made the grim discovery about 10:00am on Sunday.

The pair's father alerted police to the baby's body.

Police Inspector Andrew Holland said the body was naked and buried 30 centimetres below the surface.

He said it had started to decompose, adding that it would be difficult to estimate a time or cause of death without further forensic investigation.

AN autopsy on the body of a baby found buried at a Sydney beach has revealed it was a girl.

No information has been released about the baby’s age or how long it had been buried under 30cm of sand.

A desperate search is also under way for the baby’s mother. Police are scouring hospital records, talking to mother support groups and going through births, deaths and marriages documents.

Her umbilical cord was still attached, suggesting she wasn't born in a hospital.

The autopsy couldn't reveal if she ever took a breath.
"And all of a sudden these police came screaming down with a very serious look on their face and they closed the beach," said Councillor Brendan Roberts.

The discovery of the baby's body in Maroubra, a week after a newborn was found alive in a Quakers Hill drain, has renewed the debate around baby hatches.

No, there has been no other information. There will be no hospital records, IMO, because the placenta was buried with the baby. I doubt they will find the mother, unless the surf club has CCTV and it was clear. It is a pretty isolated area, for being in the middle of Sydney. Most of the hustle and bustle happens further north, it is quieter down the south end of the beach. Maybe Horizons has CCTV?

Maroubra locals adopt dumped baby girl to give her proper burial

A Sydney family has adopted a baby whose remains were found on a beach last year, in an effort to give her a name and a proper funeral.

On November 30 last year the body of an unknown baby was found on Maroubra Beach. Despite efforts by police to locate the baby's mother, the newborn's identity was never confirmed.

Bill Green and Filomena D'Alessandro made the decision to give her the respectful farewell they say she deserves.

"We were at Filomena's sister's house and she read in the paper that the baby was going to get a destitute burial. She looked at me and said 'that's not going to happen'," Mr Green said.

Mr Green said his wife is "a very determined woman" and he supports what she has done "100 percent".
 
What a wonderful thing to do for this baby. Bless them.
 
I think of baby Lily Grace often. I am glad someone gave her a name.

Newborn girl found at Maroubra beach farewelled in funeral funded by caring locals

A white casket no bigger than a shoebox was carried into the church service today by a local surf life saver and police officer at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Centre.

Inside the coffin, adorned with pink roses, the body of the baby girl was dressed in a white gown made from a wedding dress.
