Police in Kent, England, have finally resolved a decade's old, brutal stabbing of a schoolgirl, and probably saved some other women's lives too.
'Colin Ash-Smith, 46, stabbed Claire Tiltman from behind as she took a short cut through a dark alleyway to a friends house in 1993, four days after her 16th birthday.
He attended her funeral a month later with his Labour councillor parents wearing the same beige jacket he wore the night of the murder...A knife-obsessed loner, Ash-Smith has been in prison since 1996 for stabbing two other young women in brutal attacks similar to those on Claire, jurors heard.
When officers searched his family home last year they found an edition of a local newspaper marking the first anniversary of Claires death, which he had kept as a trophy. A five-week trial heard details of how Ash-Smith killed Claire as part of a spree of attacks on girls and young women across Kent...Ash-Smith told police that at time of the murder he was leafleting with his mother, Diane, a Labour councillor and later the local mayor.'.... (So did his mother verify his alibi, I wonder?)

'After killing Ms Tiltman, he launched a second attack on another young woman, Charlotte Barnard, in the same town, Greenhithe in Kent, in 1995, leaving her for dead...She was stabbed 14 times but survived and Ash-Smith was later jailed...Speaking from the witness box, Ash-Smith told how he went on midnight walks armed with knives hunting for victims. In an attack he later dubbed his masterpiece, Ash-Smith attempted to murder and sexually assault a young mother in 1988.
He pounced on her late at night and marched her by gunpoint to a quarry where he gagged and took photos of her in sexual poses. He tried to strangle her with a school tie before stabbing and leaving her for dead. She survived.
Claire's parents have died in the two decades since her killing and police say their deaths made officers more determined to catch her killer.'
Ash-Smith was arrested for Claire's murder the day he was due a parole hearing for his other attacks. An unwelcome and unpleasant surprise for him I guess. He stated his hatred of women in court, which also heard how a 'search of his distinctive white Ford Capri uncovered one half of a school tie which police established had been used in the rape, kidnap and attempted murder of a 27-year-old woman in Swanscombe on 21 December 1988.'
Questions are being asked about why it took so long to charge Ash-Smith with this murder, and there may be an inquiry into it.
