A man was charged Wednesday with killing and dismembering his mother and stepfather, whose body parts were found in trash bags and containers inside their home. Frederick C. Harris is facing two counts each of criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse in the deaths of 73-year-old Olivia and 76-year-old Lamar Gilbert...

Penn Hills police found remnants of a carpet that appeared to be blood-stained and more than a half dozen garbage cans in the garage, four of which appeared to be new. Among other things, the trash cans contained a man's torso with stab wounds, the victims' heads and two sets of feet and hands, police said. Investigators didn't find a woman's torso or arms, nor did they find a man's arms.

With search warrants, detectives found receipts for four garbage containers purchased Monday and Tuesday afternoon and a section of the laundry room floor that appeared to be wiped clean, police said. Surveillance video from a Home Depot store showed Harris buying the garbage cans.

Police sources tell KDKA-TV News that an argument may have provoked a horrific double murder and the dismemberment of the elderly victims' bodies in Penn Hills...

Harris moved in with his mother and stepfather last weekend, after investigators say his biological father kicked him out of his house when he allegedly tried to choke him.

Frederick Cooper Harris III, 47, told a court-appointed psychiatrist three years ago that he had a “great” childhood and maintained close relationships with his family members.

Wednesday afternoon, investigators with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office determined Olivia and Lamar Gilbert, 73 and 76 respectively, died of injuries inflicted by a sharp instrument, likely the five bloodied kitchen knives, some with bent blades and broken handles, police say they recovered from one of seven garbage cans discovered in the Gilberts' garage...

Assistant District Attorney Leo Ciaramitaro said there has been a warrant for Harris' arrest since March. Prosecutors attempted to revoke his parole there because he failed to undergo a mental health evaluation or follow its recommendations. That revocation hearing was never conducted because Harris failed to appear in court. Harris had pleaded guilty to trespassing after police discovered in 2011 that he'd taken up residence in an upscale Murrysville home that was empty and for sale.

Frederick Harris III peppered his letters to a local judge with references to court rulings as he tried to work his way out of a squatting case. He was known to answer questions about his criminal charges by invoking God as his attorney and saying he feared death as a punishment.

At other times, during the months and years before police said he killed and dismembered his mother and stepfather inside their Penn Hills home, Harris, 47, drew little attention. He was "just a normal inmate" during a brief stay at the Westmoreland County Prison, one official said. He avoided detection by sheriff's deputies who screened or visited six addresses while seeking him for nine months on a parole violation.

Exactly what prompted the killings of Olivia and Lamar Gilbert remained unclear Thursday, as did the locations of some of their remains. Allegheny County police, who are investigating the case, said they were not releasing more information.

    September 2016:

Penn Hills man found guilty of killing and dismembering mother, stepfather

An Allegheny County jury found Frederick Harris III guilty Tuesday of the December 2014 killing and dismemberment of his mother and stepfather at their Penn Hills home.

The jury deliberated for about two hours before returning a guilty verdict against Harris, 49, on two counts each of first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.

Police and prosecutors said Harris fatally stabbed Olivia Gilbert, 73, and Lamar Gilbert, 76, on or about Dec. 13, 2014, then cut up their corpses, placed the remains in garbage bags and tried to scour the basement of their home of evidence over the next few days.

The first-degree murder charges carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole; Harris's formal sentencing hearing will be Jan. 3.
