Police were called to the property about 11.20am, following reports of a woman with serious injuries.

They have now set up a a mobile centre at the scene, with officers from the Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch, Child Protection and Investigation Unit, Scenes of Crime and Scientific section at the scene.

Manoora is a suburb of of the far north Queensland city of Cairns, and is about four kilometres from the central business district.

Neighbours said the children lived there with their stepfather. Murray St is a diverse multicultural area with a mix of both private and public housing in a western suburb of Cairns.

It has had a stigma in previous years as places to avoid for people looking to move to the area.

But more recently these suburbs, particularly the northern parts of Manoora, have become more popular with people looking to enter the Cairns property market.

Thanks for this new information. I just posted a thread in the crimes against children section I didn't know what forum to post a thread in. (Mods please feel free to delete my thread if in the wrong place). It is very very sad I wonder if it could be the father or another relative since a woman (maybe mum) also has stab wounds. How can you stab anyone let alone eight innocent kids? Whoever did this must be suffering a mental health issue?

R.I.P to all the children it is so tragic and just before Christmas too.

I also think I posted in the wrong place...:)
I am hoping its not the Mum, I find it odd that she was left alive. Usually when that happens they are involved, just a horror either way.

I am confused, if the Mum was in stable condition, why did it take a family friend to discover the children? Did the Mom not call the Police? IMHO
