CA - Brenda Sierra, 15, abducted & murdered, Montebello, 18 Oct 2002
Brenda Sierra was on her way to school Oct. 18, 2002, when she disappeared. Her body was found the following day in a remote wooded area in the San Bernardino Mountains near Crestline...
The slaying has been difficult to solve, authorities say, because although neither Brenda nor her family were associated with gangs, the case involves gang members who were unwilling to talk...
Sierra attended Schurr High School in Montebello; she was a good student and had just celebrated her quinceanera a few months before she was killed.
New developments in the 2002 kidnap, rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl could make the arrest of suspects imminent, but investigators still need a little more help from the public before they can arrest the suspects and put them on trial...
It is believed that a friend of hers, a teenage girl she trusted, was involved in Brenda's kidnap.
Investigators say Brenda was killed to send a warning to a member of her family who witnessed a murder. Brenda was a totally innocent young woman with no involvement in gangs. The only reason she was killed was to silence her family and friends, according to detectives.

Rosemary Chavira pleaded not guilty to kidnap and murder charges Tuesday in connection with the slaying of Brenda Sierra, who was snatched off the sidewalk on her way to school on Oct. 18, 2002 and whose body was found in the mountains the next day.
"She actually was a friend of Brenda at the time and coordinated the kidnap itself," said Lt. Dave Coleman, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "Evidence indicates to us that she was present during the rapes and during the murder"...
Three others are being sought in the case.

Chavira was charged with murder during the commission of a kidnapping and rape and also with gang allegations. If convicted, she could face life in prison without possibility of parole.
Chavira was 15 when Brenda Sierra was kidnapped on Oct. 18, 2002 while walking to a friend's house to catch a ride to Schurr High School in Montebello. Sierra was taken to a home in East Los Angeles, sexually assaulted, and then taken to another place where she was bludgeoned to death...
Investigators previously released sketches of two unknown gang members and asked for the public's help in finding them. Authorities also want to question George Barraza, who is believed to be in Mexico but may travel back and forth across the border and is wanted on a previous drug conviction.

“We have identified five individuals involved in this. Two of the individuals are incarcerated, one fled to Mexico, one is deceased and one is a young female related to one of the suspects,” Brandenburg said...
“We’ve had eyewitnesses come forward and we have a witness to the crime and the sexual assault that occurred at a house on Williamson Drive in East L.A., where she was held for a period of time.” Brandenburg said noting that sexually assaulting a woman is not acceptable in Hispanic gang culture. “It’s out of the box,” he said. For this reason, he believes there are witnesses out there that would be willing to talk to detectives.

Ken Seto remembers Brenda Sierra's laugh and the times she talked about one day going to college in his career exploration class at Montebello's Schurr High School in 2002. He remembers the 15-year-old's upbeat attitude and that she was a top fundraiser by selling candy, food and knickknacks for a mentorship program called Renaissance that helped motivate students.
"This kid was special," Seto said. "She was so happy. She wanted to become a great student." Brenda didn't get the chance...
For Seto, the news not only brought closure but it also rekindled talk of naming a scholarship in Brenda's honor. Seto said he'd nominate the scholarship to someone like Brenda — fun, outgoing, energetic... "We'll look for a student who's really trying to improve," Seto said. He's hoping to meet soon with Brenda's sister, Fabiola Saavedra, to pitch the idea.
