Identified! MA - Brockton, 2 sets of human remains, Dec'14 - Ashley Mylett, Linda Schufeldt

Two sets of human remains were discovered during a search of a wooded area in Massachusetts and at least one of the bodies, that of a young woman, had been dismembered, authorities said Monday.

The bodies were found near each other but had been there for different periods of time, based on the conditions of the remains, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said at news briefing...

One body was determined to be that of a woman believed to be in her 20s, and it appeared to have been dismembered, Cruz said. The gender of the other body could not immediately be determined, nor was it possible to know if it had also been dismembered, he said.

The remains were found in a wooded area about a quarter-mile from the parking lot of the Brockton VFW Post 1046 off North Quincy Street. The wooded area is also behind several single-family homes on North Quincy Street.

Detectives were seen canvassing the neighborhood on Sunday. Police also asked to view surveillance video from the Brockton VFW Post 1046 as part of their investigation, said Post Commander Jim Doherty.

This is a relatively quieter part of Brockton. N Quincy is a busy street, but I mean "quiet" as in crime. I wonder though why someone would dump bodies there, when Ames Nowell has very secluded areas and the entrance is about 5 mins away.

I haven't heard of more than one missing from the Brockton area, anyone else?

Subscribing so I can watch this one. Always thinking of Jennifer Fay, even Debbie Melo.

I'll be curious to find out how long LE thinks the remains have been there / when the women died.

They say "at least two weeks" in the article I linked; my guess is that the woman they describe was decomposed but not skeletal. Not sure about the other remains though.

It sounds like the second set of remains is maybe just extra bones or fragments that didn't match up with the first set.

... nor was it possible to know if it had also been dismembered, he said.

Also, I think I read somewhere that the second set of remains was found underneath the first set, rather than just "near each other." Lemme see if I can find that again...

Ah, here:

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz, whose office is overseeing the investigation, said in a telephone interview that detectives are searching for the identity of a woman in her 20s whose body was found atop the skeletal remains of another person.

The woman’s body had been dismembered; the remains found underneath were skeletal and so far decomposed that the gender was not immediately known, officials said.

Missing from in and around Plymouth County in the past 5 years:

Evelin Valibayova - Missing about 3 1/2 years. Foul play suspected
Faith Coleman - Missing 10 months. Probable runaway

https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/24732/0 - Missing 7 months. The circumstances (car was left behind in parking lot w/ keys left in ignition and her shoe was found nearby) make foul play sound likely
Jordan Cochrane - Missing from Brockton for 14 months. Probable runaway

Cruz did not rule out that remains of others could be in the wooded area.

“This is still part of the investigation. People are still working on that. We’ll wait and see and where that leads,” Cruz said. “There’s been significant work back here in the past 24 hours to look at every nook and cranny so they can see what else potentially could be back there.”

A Brockton woman was identified Wednesday as the person whose dismembered body was found on Sunday stacked on top of the skeletal remains of a second woman.

Ashley M. Mylett was 20 years old, according to Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office. Cruz’s office released Mylett’s name but did not provide any more information about her or how they believe her remains came to be dumped in the Brockton woods where they were found Sunday.

So, both sets of remains are female.

This is very close to me, so sad for these women and their families. I hope they are able to identify the other victim soon to give her family answers. Of corse I also hope they find and convict whoever is responsible ASAP.

So very sad. Seems like there must be a serial killer out there or who else would put 2 dead women in the same spot who died at different times. That's very scary. I have friends who used to live near there but they have moved somewhere else now. They always spoke of Brocton as being a very nice place to live. They considered it quite safe there.

I think parts of Brockton are pretty high-crime, although you can say that about a lot of places. The building where Ashley and the older man were arrested in 2013 is some sort of former mill or factory that was broken into apartments and small recording studios. It had been the site of at least one shooting previously. The man was arrested for cocaine trafficking and she was arrested for possession. I'm definitely NOT blaming the victim here, but I wonder if the deaths have a drug angle.
