Today's events in Edmonton leaving 9 people dead is a tragic and senseless act of domestic violence. Cyndi Duong, 37 was the female killed at the city's Southside residence. The first residence that the gunman visited. A man and 3 children in the home are safe. x

All 3 crime scenes are connected to the gunman although details of the associations have not been released.

The 7 others murdered on the northend included 3 middle-aged women and 2 middle-aged men, along with a 2-year-old toddler and his 6-year-old sister.

The gunman later committed suicide in a restaurant in Fort Saskatchewan, a small city approximately 40 km's northeast of Edmonton. The man was also related to the restaurant.

Domestic violence (longstanding for the past 2 years) appears to be the cause of the murders. The gunman was known to police and committed the murders with a stolen 9 mm handgun obtained in BC in 2006.

It always makes me angry when the perpetrator of a crime, turns the gun or whatever his weapon of choice is on himself in order to escape punishment.

The second call to police that night was about a man (the gunman) being overly emotional and possibly suicidal. When police checked on the call, the man was absent from the home and all seemed fine at that time. EPS received another call shortly after midnight and upon entry into the home, found 7 deceased, including 5 adults and 2 children.

Whatever the underlying reasons are for this horrific act of violence and loss of life, my heart goes out to all the victims in this incident. God Bless all on their way to eternal peace. My condolences and lots of love, light and blessings go out to all the friends and relatives of the deceased to give them strength as they try to make logical sense out of a senseless act and as they begin their long journey to healing. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Killer identified as Phu Lam. I have read rampage killers and mass murderers are usually older.

Canada Edmonton: Eight killed in 'senseless mass murder'

He said it was the worst mass killing in Edmonton since six people were killed in 1956.

"It appears to be an extreme case of domestic violence gone awry," he told a press conference, describing the killings as "planned and deliberate".

"This series of events are not believed to be random acts, and there is no risk to the broader public. These events do not appear to be gang-related, but rather tragic incidents of domestic violence."

Police say that the gunman used a stolen 9mm handgun and later killed himself at a restaurant north of Edmonton. They have only released the names of one of the victims and have not detailed the relationship between the gunman and his victims.

Mr Knecht said that the man who committed suicide had a criminal record going back to 1987.

While the investigation has wrapped up, Mr. Pattison acknowledged Wednesday that one large hole remains. An hour and half after police clustered around the Duong house, they received a call for a depressed and potentially suicidal man at the home co-owned by Mr. Phu that is located on the opposite end of the city.
Officers arrived and walked around the home, but didn’t enter. Four hours later, they were called to the address again, this time to discover seven bodies: three women, two men and two children under the age of 10. They couldn’t locate Mr. Phu or the stolen 9-millimetre handgun they believe he used in what Chief Rod Knecht called a “planned and deliberate” act. All they had to go on was a description of the vehicle he was seen driving, a black Mercedes SUV.
Any link between the two addresses was unknown at the time and remains unclear to investigators. “That’s one of the gaps,” said Mr. Pattison.
“This is multiple crime scenes with large families. The medical examiner will be confirming whether or not they were known to each other.”

However it is not clear if Duong was the intended target.Friends of Duong claim there’s no connection between her and Phu Lam.

Why would he enter into her home and shoot her if he didn't even know her? Did he want police to come and kill him? The cops never even entered the home r.e.the call about the suicidal male. They walked around the house. Sad. Not sure if the residents were already dead at the time or could have been revived. JMO

Edmonton police initially said they went to the home around 8:30 p.m., but late Tuesday night they revised that time to 9:44 p.m.


Police walked around the exterior of the home and peered in windows and found nothing suspicious. Nobody answered the door and there was no trace of the man, so officers left. Before entering the home, police needed “reasonable and probable grounds” to do so, and did not have them at that time, Knecht said.


They returned just after midnight after receiving further information from a “second individual,” the chief said, although he would not elaborate on the nature of the information or who the person was.

Land title documents show the home is owned by Phu Lam and Thuy-Tien “Tien” Truong. Neighbours say a couple lived in the home with two children, a boy around age eight and a toddler, as well as an elderly woman.


Elvis, the eldest child, was a favourite in the neighbourhood. One neighbour helped him take the training wheels off his bike, while another said Elvis played with all the kids on the block and was in Grade 3 with her son.

It seems the house with the seven murder victims belonged to the suspect. The first residence with the victim Cyndi Duong is the one that doesn't make sense here. However, police say that he shot her. The second call was for a house across town r.e. suicidal male. There were two calls for that residence made by two different callers. It's very strange. The SUV found at the restaurant had a window smashed and was linked to the residence at Cyndi Duong's.

“We get hundreds of these calls a day,” he said.

The two calls were merged and officers went back to the north-end house.

So the police went to another address (of the female caller?) before going to Lam's house?

Duong was the first victim discovered in a southwest Edmonton home Monday evening, but investigators now believe the deadly rampage started at a home on the other side of Edmonton, where seven bodies were found.
The suspect in the murders, 53-year-old Phu Lam, was found dead from an apparent suicide at a restaurant in Fort Saskatchewan, located about 40 kilometres northeast of Edmonton. It’s believed that the restaurant was owned by his first wife and that he did some maintenance work there.
Two other victims have been identified so far: Lam’s second wife, Tien Trong, and a young child named Elvis.
Police have described the killings as “an extreme case of domestic violence.”
One of Truong’s friends, who did not want to be identified out of fear for her safety, told CTV News that Truong was trying to leave Lam because of his abusive behaviour.
