    35 people killed and 42 injured in New Year celebration stampede Shanghai China

    "China's state-run Xinhua News Agency is reporting that at least 35 people have been killed in a stampede during the city's New Year's celebrations.

    The report cites the Shanghai government in saying that at least another 42 people were injured.

    The report says the death and injuries occurred at the city's riverfront Bund area, which has become notorious for being jammed with spectators during major events, especially New Years."
