MISSING WOMAN'S CAR FOUND COVERED IN SNOW AT BIG BEAR
BIG BEAR, Calif. (KABC) -- The car of a woman who went missing in late December was found Sunday in Big Bear, launching a massive search. A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy found Lisa Cimbaluk's car covered in snow at the Woodland Trailhead in Fawnskin and ran the license plate. She was reported missing on Dec. 29 by her parents in Irvine. "We're assuming she drove up here sometime between the 29th and 30th and are currently checking the area north of where the vehicle was located," San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Morsch said.

Search for missing Irvine woman continues in Big Bear
Rescuers are searching the mountains near Big Bear Lake for a woman who went missing about a week ago, a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman said. Lisa Ann Cimbaluk, 35, of Irvine was reported missing by her family on Dec. 30, said Farrah Emami, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department. Sheriff's officials found Cimbaluk's vehicle early Sunday morning, Dec. 4, parked at the Woodland Trailhead in Fawnskin, a small community north of Big Bear Lake, and began searching the nearby woods, said Jodi Miller of the San Bernardino sheriff's department.

"Deputies and volunteers searched the area yesterday for the missing woman and are very concerned due to the overnight temperatures in the area," Miller said.

The circumstances of the disappearance are not available, but "there are no signs of foul play," Emami said.

Cimbaluk’s snow-covered white Toyota Rav4 was found early Sunday parked at a trailhead across from Big Bear Lake. The last snow that fell in the Big Bear region was the afternoon of Dec. 31.

“She’s not the outdoorsy type of person and she does not have hiking experience.”

The search will continue Wednesday.

Lisa lives at home with her parents, having returned to California about a year ago after studying in New York and working in the Washington, D.C., area, John says. On Dec. 29, Lisa was in her bedroom when John told her he was going out to run errands. When he returned, she was gone, along with her vehicle, he says. But she didn’t return home, and John became worried.

John says they searched for her, saying she likes to go to the library to use the computer. But there was no sign of his daughter, and on Dec. 30 the family went to the Irvine Police Department to file a missing person report.

Lisa is a graduate of the University of California and was planning on graduate school to obtain a doctorate in sociology, according to John. She has traveled around the world volunteering in London, South Africa and other areas.

John says it’s been more than 20 years since the family has been to the mountains. They normally traveled to Lake Arrowhead in the summer, but did ski at Snow Valley two decades ago. He says Lisa likes animals, but he can’t imagine her befriending anyone in Big Bear because she is so shy.

Tiffany Swantek, public information officer for the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station, says there is no evidence of foul play. Lisa’s vehicle has not been ransacked and all her personal belongings were inside, including her purse. Lisa doesn’t have a cellphone, John says.

There was an annual Adventure Pass inside the Toyota Rav 4, Swantek says. The pass was purchased in December 2014, which is consistent with when Lisa disappeared. It’s unknown when in December or where the pass was purchased, Swantek says.

When the deputy discovered the vehicle parked in the Woodland Trail lot, it was covered in snow, indicating it had been parked prior to or during the Dec. 30 snowstorm that dropped up to 8 inches of snow. Temperatures for several days following the storm were in the single digits and even below zero overnight.

This is a sad, yet odd, disappearance. My heart goes out to Lisa's family! Seems like difficult conditions for searching too so hopefully all searchers stay safe!

On Tuesday, almost 60 San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies and search-and-rescue volunteers from five counties spent seven to eight daylight hours combing a milelong swath of forested, rocky terrain from Big Bear Lake north to Bertha Ridge. The effort included a search dog, a helicopter and four-wheel-drive vehicles.

The number of people who have joined the search effort was unavailable early Thursday morning.

A helicopter crew spotted a woman's body in the water of Big Bear Lake around 10 a.m. Thursday, and search-and-rescue teams on the ground responded to recover the body from the lake, officials said.

The San Bernardino County coroner will confirm an identity and cause of death in the near future.

So very sad, with a bright future in front of her.
