NY - Thomas Gilbert, 70, murdered in his Manhattan apt; son charged, 4 Jan 2015

A man who started a biotech hedge fund and grew it to a business with $200 million in assets was found shot to death in his upscale Manhattan apartment.

Thomas Gilbert, 70, founded the biotech and healthcare-focused hedge fund, Wainscott Capital Partners Fund, in 2011.

His wife found his body in their 8th-floor apartment about 3:30 p.m Sunday. He had been shot in the head, police said.

The murder sent cops fanning out across the tony Sutton Place neighborhood seeking the son, Thomas Gilbert Jr., who fled the scene on foot and headed to his W. 18th St. pad, officials said.

The son, 30, was captured about 10:45 p.m. after cops in riot gear chopped down the door of his ground-floor apartment and found him hiding inside, officials said.

He was taken away in handcuffs, but a motive for the alleged patricide remained unclear. Gilbert Jr., a Princeton grad, showed no emotion and appeared stone-faced as cops took him to the 17th Precinct stationhouse for questioning.

A kid who apparently had everything going for him, at first glance. Sounds like maybe he went down a wrong path some time ago and dad got tired of funding his wastrel lifestyle.

Money and greed all over again
He has not been named a suspect yet, but by all accounts he was lucky to have an education only a few can afford, so why wasn't he able to pursue his dreams. He wasn't even able to pay his rent.
Likely felt entitled, always wanted more for little or no effort required.
If so, I guess he has made his bed.

The son of a hedge fund founder accused in his father’s shooting death made his initial court appearance Monday, standing with his defense attorneys and saying nothing.

Tommy Gilbert, 30, did not enter a plea. He’s charged with murder in the second degree for the fatal shooting of Thomas Gilbert, 70, along with a weapons charge and 21 counts of criminal possession of forgery devices – with authorities saying they recovered a skimming device and 21 blank credit cards in Gilbert’s apartment...

Investigators told ABC News that the father recently discussed no longer paying his son's rent. They also say he discussed reducing his weekly allowance from $400 per week to $300.
    Different numbers here:

A law enforcement source told the New York Post that Thomas Gilbert Jr. had just been told by his father that he would only receive $400 for spending money per month from that point on in addition to $2,400 per month for rent. The younger Gilbert had previously received $600 per month.

    Wainscott Founder Gilbert’s Son Charged

"This is a strong case,” Assistant District Attorney Craig Ascher said as the younger Gilbert was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court, where he was ordered held without bail. “The defendant brazenly shot his father in the head.”

He graduated from Princeton but couldn't find any kind of work? And he killed his father over 200 bucks a month?

    From Fifth Avenue's link:

"The defendant also had 21 blank credit cards and a skimming device, which swipes credit and debit-card information when affixed to an ATM, prosecutors said."

I am sure he would have been able to find work, but may be not the work he wanted?
Perhaps, with little or no experience he was offered some entry level job but he wanted to be CEO.

Wanted to be a successful businessman like his father, but perhaps he wasn't prepared to work hard for hit.
So he plotted to take over his father position as head of the company, likely a successful business, by staging his suicide.
    Just plain evil.

The ultimate basement, nope scratch that, penthouse dweller. THIRTY YEARS OLD?!? FFS, get a job, son. It's not like you didn't have the social connections via your family and friends.

Imagine what that money and education could have done for a bright young soul willing to put it to use to better him or herself.

The man accused of killing his millionaire Manhattan dad is straight out of the horror flick “American Psycho’’ — “able to charm . . . with his good looks and his waspy background, but behind that, he was dangerous,’’ a close pal told The Post in an exclusive interview Tuesday.

Thomas Gilbert Jr. should have been locked up for arson and for the violation of a protective order against him long before the slaying — but “wasn’t because he’s a charming, white Princeton graduate,’’ the friend said.
