Columbia County sheriff’s deputies believe the 11-year-old somehow assisted her 15-year-old sister, AK, in the shooting. At about 10 p.m., the 11-year-old and AK went to nearby High Springs Police to report that their brother was dead, authorities said. A High Springs officer called the Columbia Sheriff’s Office and deputies arrived at the Kornegay home at 1205 Sophie Drive to find the teen dead in the living room, according to Murray Smith, a sheriff’s spokesman.

Authorities have yet to identify the slain 16-year-old, who was a student at Columbia County High School. AK also was a student at the school but had withdrawn due to disciplinary issues... AK is suspected as the person who pulled the trigger on the weapon, which she grabbed from a room that had been locked by her parents, Smith said...

Meanwhile the parents of the children also were arrested on Monday afternoon. Keith J. Kornegay, 37, and Misty S. Kornegay, 32, were both charged with failure to supervise in treatment of children. Keith Kornegay is a truck driver and Misty Kornegay had left with him to complete a trip, Smith said.

The Sheriff's Office said 15-year-old AK admitted she shot her 16-year-old brother, then walked away from the home with her 11-year-old sister, N, leaving their 3-year-old sister at home... They have not revealed a motive.

AK was arrested and charged with premeditated murder with no bond. She was taken to the Columbia County Detention Facility. The Sheriff's Office said N assisted her older sister and was also arrested and charged with murder...

The family's youngest child, a 3-year-old, is in the care of the Department of Children and Families.

Since the parents have also been arrested in relation to the killing, their FB profiles are fair game, right?

Couldn't find one for A.

why do I suspect this one is gonna get really really ugly?

Yeah, A is a minor and hasn't been charged as an adult that I know of, so it's best to be cautious. I'm actually a little uncomfortable using her name as reported by MSM, because I'm of two minds about what the motive for the shooting might be.

Please stick to initials and continue to exercise discretion. The minors' FB pages are off limits.

Thanks!

I'm with ya.

From the link in the OP. I have a feeling this may be closely linked to motive. MOO
News4Jax learned that deputies responded to the home in 2010 to investigate a report of inappropriate behavior between the victim and *advertiser censored**** K*******, but no charges were ever filed.

It would certainly explain why the parents are charged as they are if they were on notice back in 2010 there were issues that might warrant close supervision of the kids and yet mom and dad left all of them home to supervise themselves. KWIM?

The developments unfolded on Monday. The two girls shot their brother Monday night and walked out of their home in White Springs, Fla., News4Jax and the sheriff's office reported. A police officer spotted them and questioned them, prompting them to tell the officer that a shooting had taken place at their home, according to News4Jax

SNIP

A told the White Springs police officer that her brother had beaten her up on Monday, Deputy Murray Smith of the sheriff's office told NBC.

Oh my gosh this reads like the two sisters left the 3 year old there at the home and walked off. :sigh: I can only hope that child was secured in another room and not left there with the dead brother at a bloody crime scene. :(

Dear God....what a mess. I can only imagine what has been happening in that house.

Police called in 2010 for inappropriate behavior between the victim and 15 year old???? Sigh.....

in 2010 the older sister would have been around 11 and the 16 yr old brother would have been around 12.

Just found an update that seems to indicate both sisters are being charged with premeditated murder. the girls names are still being used in the press because of the nature of the crime and now their photos are out there. Hate this case already. It's gonna be some ulgy stuff coming out on this one. I have no doubt.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL (WJAX/CNN) - Police have charged two sisters, ages 15 and 11, with premeditated murder in the death of their older brother.

Daily Mail has the story now. As always they have the most pics of the parties involved and the residence.

A and N are said to have walked out of the house about 9.30pm Monday, right after the shooting.
They left their three-year-old sister in the house with the body of their brother.

An officer stopped to talk to the pair, who confessed their had been a shooting.
Police then arrived at the house about 10pm.

Some newspapers differ in some details:
Authorities said that after the shooting, the two sisters packed clothes and left their home in northern Columbia County, walking to a Dollar Store in White Springs, nearly 4 miles away. The 11-year-old then called a friend's mother to tell her that she had run away. That woman called police about 9:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, the younger girl first claimed she didn't know where their parents were, but <modsnip> then said they had been kicked out of the house.

Question: Can the girls be tried as adults for first degree murder?

It depends on state law, I think? I'd be very surprised if the 11yo is charged as an adult, but not if the 15yo is.

Third Circuit State Attorney Jeff Siegmeister hasn't decided whether to charge the girls as adults. Children arrested for crimes and treated as juveniles can be held in detention for a maximum of 30 days before being formally charged.

Sheriff Hunter said the investigation found evidence that the parents had removed A from school because she had been acting out and had attempted to kill herself several times. The parents had kept her locked in her room for up weeks at a time with just a blanket and bucket for her to urinate.

The police report called it "inhumane conditions."

There is also a family history of sexual abuse, with a member of the extended family serving time and listed on Florida's registry of sexual offenders

This whole situation just makes me want to vomit. An eleven year old? Ugh.....

some thoughts on the info received so far.

DCF was involved with this family in 2010 in regards to inappropriate relationship/behavior/activity involving A and D (victim).

A would have been around 10 or 11 at the time of that incident back in 2010.

Parents seem to have a history of inadequate supervision and leaving the kids to their own devices.

A was reported to have been removed from school due to suicide attempts and behavior issues. The parents answer to this situation was to apparently lock her in a room for weeks on end with a bucket.

A claims to have been also held in locked room by victim, brother D. At parents direction?

A claims to have been beaten by D earlier in the day prior to shooting. At parents behest or condoned behavior by parents?

younger sister involved in the shooting is currently 11.

Two possible dynamics at play here in my mind.

A acts out inappropriately with her brother which involves DCF and parents blame her and begin to scapegoat her. Creating an atmosphere where brother also felt comfortable scapegoating her. He is apparently her "keeper" when parents are gone on their little over the road trips.

or perhaps. 2010 D, brother, is acting inappropriately with A and she tattles. Involving DCF in this family's lives. She is scapegoated or not believed. Keep in mind that little sis in now the age she was when whatever happened between A and D in 2010.

Anybody picking up what I am laying down here? For some reason, 11 year old sister aided and abetted in this shooting. I want to know how. Because I already have my suspicions as to why. KWIM?

DID HEAVY EDITING MISREAD A PORTION OF THE NEWS SNIP REGARDING FAMILY MEMBER AND RSO and SO REMOVED THAT PORTION OF SPECULATION FROM ABOVE
