ID - Three people killed, one injured in Moscow shooting spree, 10 Jan 2015

Investigators are probing the background of a suspect in a shooting spree in Moscow, Idaho, that left three people dead and another critically wounded. A gunman opened fire Saturday at three separate locations in the western Idaho city, killing a victim at each site.

John Lee, 29, the suspected attacker, was captured in the afternoon following a high-speed chase in nearby Washington state. Moscow Police Chief David Duke said Lee killed his adoptive mother, 61-year-Terri Grzebielski, at her home before heading to Northwest Mutual life insurance.

Thanks for starting the thread Past Tense!

This occurred about an hour south of where I am so I'm familiar with the area....have family there. It's a quiet farming community and this type of event is so rare. Crime is pretty much unheard of....the expected partying takes place at the two Universities, WSU & U of Idaho, but it's a beautiful and peaceful area which consists of kind, hard working people.

So sad this happened....I wonder what dispute set this guy off to shoot his landlord and client who apparently was at the wrong place at the wrong time. I read that the perp's adoptive mother ate at the Arby's restaurant but there doesn't seem to be any connection between the manager that was murdered and the shooter either. Will be checking for updates on this.

    What a mess.

Investigators say a laptop computer from the vehicle of a man suspected in a deadly shooting spree in western Idaho could yield clues to a motive for the violence. Investigators searched the car of 29-year-old John Lee, recovering two semi-automatic pistols, a revolver, a shotgun and a rifle, along with the laptop...

The first death was that of Lee's adoptive mother, Terri Grzebielski, 61, at her home. Police said Lee then headed to Northwest Mutual life insurance, where he shot his landlord, David Trail, 76... as well as Michael Chin, 39, of Seattle. Duke said Chin had no link to Lee, but he was discussing business with Trail when the gunman arrived...

Upon leaving the insurance office, the shooter drove to an Arby's restaurant and asked for the manager. When she appeared, he pulled out a gun and opened fire. The manager, Belinda Niebuhr, 47, died at the Moscow hospital. Duke told The Associated Press that Lee's parents ate at the restaurant and knew the manager well, but it's not clear whether Lee did as well.

“We are deeply saddened by the violence,” said University of Idaho President Chuck Staben, noting that two of the victims had strong connections to the university.

One was Lee’s adoptive mother, Terri Grzebielski, 61, who was shot at her home. Grzebielski was a physician’s assistant who worked at Moscow Family Medicine’s UI Student Health clinic... Staben said Grzebielski “was highly valued and respected”...

Few details were available on Lee’s background. Duke said he had been adopted at birth and recently returned to Moscow after living a few years in the Midwest.

I live close and have done tons of research in the last few days. All of these.people are connected, including the seattle man that LE keeps declaring had no connection at all. I have a feeling this case is not at all what it seems and that the suspect has every intention of telling what the connections are at some point.

John Lee, the man accused of shooting and killing three people in Moscow last Saturday, was back in court Friday. John Lee was going before a judge in Whitman County for eluding charges where he was arrested after investigators in Latah County said he went on a shooting spree...

Lee also decided not to wave the formal process of extraditing him to Idaho, which means governors of both states will be involved...

The prosecutor, when asked if he understands why some might want him to hold off on the charges in Washington so Lee can face those murder charges in Idaho, said that if any time his case affects those murder charges across state lines, he would immediately put the case on hold to help prosecutors in Latah County.

The Whitman County prosecutor has decided not to pursue eluding charges against triple homicide suspect John Lee, who will now be extradited to Idaho Monday evening...

Tracy notes that if Lee is somehow exonerated of the murder charges in Moscow he would re-file his eluding case.

He evaded authorities, driving across the stateline into Washington before he was eventually arrested following a pursuit, but on Friday John Lee stopped running, pleaded guilty, backtracked and then entered an Alford Plea for the January 2015 shooting spree that left three dead and one wounded...

Sentencing is scheduled for May 24.
