Police have opened an investigation to see if a missing Myrtle Beach man is "Grateful Doe."

"Grateful Doe" is a man whose body was never identified after a car crash in Virginia on June 27, 1995. He's called Grateful Doe because he was wearing a Grateful Dead T-shirt and had two tickets to their show in his jeans pocket.

According to Myrtle Beach police, the department is investigating to see if a missing person identified as Jason Callahan could be Grateful Doe.

Police say Callahan has not been seen or heard from since June 1995 and, at that time, he left to follow the band Grateful Dead.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department is working with other agencies to determine if Jason Callahan is Grateful Doe by collecting DNA samples, which have been sent off for evaluation.

We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as soon as more information is made available.

"The missing man, Jason Patrick Callahan, would now be 38, Evans told police. She described him as “approximately 5’ 10” to 6’ 00” in height and approximately 160 pounds” with “wavy brown hair and brown eyes.”

While the police report does not indicate why Evans waited two decades to report her son missing, the notification appears connected to the recent social media interest in the 1995 death of an unidentified man dubbed “Grateful Doe.”

SO, of course, the "no known tattoo" statement about Jason Callahan is noteworthy.

I will read the article in a moment, thanks for posting it.

Does the mother think that Illinois Jason is the same person as her son?

I haven't seen her quoted as saying that, but a lot of the articles mention the recent social media push coupled with her 1/12/15 missing persons report.

I don't know whether to cross my fingers that he is a match for Grateful Doe, or to pray that he will be found alive.

At least his disappearance is being investigated finally.

Interesting coincidence. I don't believe this is our Grateful Doe, but I found it interesting nevertheless...

*If* this mother is right and her missing son Jason Callahan does turn out to be Grateful Doe, he would've been 37 in 2013. His birthday is 4/19/1976.

It is indeed interesting though. The name, location, single car accident causing fatal injuries...just wow :(

***edited to correct Jason's age and birth year. Thanks to Jack Straw for the info :)***

What is your source? The birth record I saw said 4/18/1976.

You found a birth record? I wasn't able to find anything.

Yes, the birth record has been found. He had a sister who passed away in 2002. His dad passed away in 2009. His mom is the last living member of his core family. He has several half-siblings who are alive.

How did he manage to live in Illinois with roomates for a while and then end up where he was in the crash in just a few short weeks?
