A teenage runaway who had no permanent home in her short, troubled life and spent two decades in an unmarked pauper's grave will finally find peace - and a permanent home - thanks to intrepid detective work.

The remains of Shannon Aumock, who was 16 when she died in 1992, were exhumed Tuesday from an unmarked county-cemetery plot in Tempe after a Phoenix police detective figured out her identity. She will be laid to rest in April with a marker bearing her name.

Then, armed with her name, detectives will seek another: that of her killer.

The teen's body was found by recreational cyclists on May 28, 1992, in a heap of brush in a desert area near 26th Street and Deer Valley Road. Homicide detectives had little to go on - not even a name. Her body had been in the desert for as long as eight weeks. It was badly decomposed.

Worse, nobody had reported her missing.

PHOENIX - Phoenix police have identified the body of a young female homicide victim found in a remote desert area in 1992.

On May 28, 1992, the body was found by an ATV rider near 20th Street and Deer Valley Road, which at the time was a remote desert area.

Forensic analysis of the remains showed the victim was a Caucasian female between 11 and 17 years old.

Brandy Myers went missing in May 1992. While searching for Brandy, remains were found which later were ID'd as Shannon Aumock's. Brandy has never been found, but now Bryan Patrick Miller has been charged with her murder. Whether he'll be charged with Shannon's murder remains to be seen.

Police: 3rd victim may be linked to canal murder suspect

In September, police submitted first-degree murder charges against Bryan Patrick Miller, the suspect in the canal murders, in the presumed death of Brandy Myers, a 13-year-old girl whose missing-persons case has languished since 1992.

Though the evidence isn't as substantial in the Aumock case, police are not ruling out Miller's involvement. Crump was unable to elaborate on what evidence links the runaway to Miller, but he called the defendant an "interesting lead" in the Aumock case.

Efforts to reach Aumock's family were unsuccessful.

According to earlier reports, Aumock was was born to a 16-year-old mother who later turned over the girl to state custody. She was placed in a foster home at age 3.

The girl was deemed one of the city's "throwaway" children who jumped from home to home during her brief life. A 2011 interview with Phoenix police said officials received 40 reports of Aumock running away. The reports stopped after late 1991.

Aumock's body had been in the desert for more than eight weeks by the time she was discovered. No one had reported her missing.

I hope they find her killer or prove it was him. The police did such a good job finding the 1500 and then sifting through the 100 to find her name. Just picked this case at random out of the cold cases.

This article mentions that have an interesting lead in suspecting Bryan Miller is involved in Shannon's case.
Woman says Phoenix 'Canal Killer' murdered her sister in 1992, now she's taking action

How close together Shannon's murder and Brandy's disappearance are, if Miller is in fact responsible for both girl's, it concerns me that there could be many more victims we don't know about.
I was watching a Youtube video on it and it said her body was discovered while searching for Brandy and she'd been dead 8 weeks. I remember the Phoenix canal murders when it happened. I lived in Mesa AZ, ironically next to a canal, and the streets were empty of pedestrians. People were afraid to be out where the killer could be lurking. It was a horrible time. He moved to Washington, I wonder if he has victims there?
