Family searches for answers for missing Drew County man
Another day has come and gone in the search for missing Drew County man, Barry Harmon, 35.

Harmon went missing January 6th. The Drew County Sheriff's Office, State Police, Arkansas Game and Fish, and other surrounding counties have helped look for Harmon in the past nine days.

Drew County Sheriff, Mark Gober said Harmon was with his parents near Coleman outside of Monticello before he went squirrel hunting around 1 in the afternoon. Harmon parents told Gober he would be back before his children come home from school. 7:00 p.m. came around; Harmon's parents notified authorities he had gone missing. They have been searching for him ever since.

On Sunday, Searchers found what is believed to be his cigarettes and shotgun shells but still no luck in finding Harmon.

Thursday, Gober and about a dozen others searched a four mile radius in a heavily wooded area behind Harmon's parents' home, the location he was last seen.*

In the time he has been missing, temperatures have dropped below freezing.

Since he went missing, State Police have used a helicopter to search the woods behind his home and cadaver dogs were brought in – all with no sign of Harmon.

That six-month update is a year old. Kind of makes you wonder if he decided to just take off and start a new life elsewhere.

A hunting vest recently discovered in Drew County could be a clue in finding a missing man...

"Some of the shells is still in the pocket and some are even corroded to the glove that was in the pocket with it," said Harmon.

So far, authorities have found no evidence of foul play, but Harmon said his gut tells him otherwise.

"He didn't go missing on his own," said Harmon. "He knows every rock and everything else in these woods around here."

A search of the area is planned for tomorrow, meeting up on Highway 83 at Coleman, about 1 mile past Hayden Loop Road on the right at 8 a.m.

Missing Hunter's Mom Begs for Other Hunter's Help

[...]

Sharon Harmon begged for help from other hunter's this season in an exclusive interview with our reporter Price McKeon.

"I know for a fact my son would have not left his children. He would not. So, yes. I think he's probably gone," Sharon Harmon told us.

We met her at her other son's home Saturday near Warren, Arkansas.

She said, "He didn't have his money. He didn't have his keys. He didn't have anything. He went into the woods to go hunting. He told me he'd be back before the boys goy off the bus that afternoon."

Age 35 years old

Details of Disappearance
Harmon was last seen in Monticello, Arkansas on January 6, 2015. He went squirrel hunting behind his house, carrying a 20-gauge shotgun, at 1:00 p.m. He told his parents he would be back by the time his children came home from school, but he never returned and has never been heard from again.

His family reported him missing at 7:00 p.m. During an extensive search of the area, searchers found spent shotgun shells and a partial pack of cigarettes believed to be Harmon's, as well as human footprints, but there was no indication of his whereabouts.

Harmon is an experienced hunter. His family initially thought he was been attacked by a wild animal; big animals including black bears and large cats live in the area where he was hunting. Now, however, they believe he met with foul play. Although he did occasionally drink alcohol and smoke marijuana, they don't think drugs or alcohol were a factor in his disappearance.

In January 2017, two years after Harmon's disappearance, a hunter found his hunting vest lying on the ground near Harmon's home. The vest was very dirty and appeared to have been exposed to the elements for a long time. The finding prompted another search of the area, but no additional evidence was uncovered.

Harmon is presumed deceased and his case remains unsolved.

Monday Night Mystery – Barry Gene Harmon Sr remains missing after stepping out for squirrel hunt | KLRT - FOX16.com

May 2021
Monday Night Mystery continues its series on missing Arkansans by diving into another bizarre missing persons case centered in rural Arkansas in heavily dense woods.

Barry Gene Harmon Sr. was 35 when he went squirrel hunting but never returned.

His family says he was an experienced hunter and does not believe investigator theories that Harmon was attacked by a wild animal.

Tony Harmon thinks his younger brother Barry met with foul play.

To Note
•Jan 5 2015, at 1pm, Barry left to go squirrel hunting in the woods behind his home
•At some point, Barry returned home to trade out his gun. The gun he first took got dirt in the barrel causing it to malfunction.
•Family reports that it appeared Barry was intoxicated (they didn’t know from what)
•he then returned to the woods behind his home to continue hunting
•the last people to see him were his parents
•Barry was reported missing that evening
•Officers were sent to the house, but since it was already dark an actual search of the woods by LE was not done that night. Instead, LE set up vehicles and turned their lights and sirens on to hopefully help Barry find his way out of the woods.
•The next day is when LE began their grid searches
•local LE, AR State Police, and AR Game & Fish conducted searches (ground & areal)
•search dogs were not used in attempt to pick up on Barry’s scent; LE states this was due to so many of Barry’s family members (and other people) already being out in the area he went missing.
•LE’s initial search effort was over 20 days; an officer was even present at night during that time
•During the initial search, LE found a pack of unopened cigarettes (brand Barry smoked) and two unused shells (matched the caliber Barry used) by a tree
•an orange vest was found in the woods about a month after he went missing by the family; it was not found in the same spot the cigarettes & shells were
•family states the vest is Barry’s; LE states it possibly may be his but it looked more like a safety work vest
•the gun has not been found
•LE believes if the gun is found, then Barry’s remains will be found
•cadaver dogs were used for almost a week; this was done about a year after he initially went missing.
•there is a plan to bring cadaver dogs back out to search again in the near future
•foul play has not been ruled out
•LE does not believe Barry was attacked by a wild animal but it is quite possible if he died due to impairment, weather elements, medical episode, etc that wild animals could have scattered his remains (and so forth)

Sheriff's Office: Skeletal remains found in wooded area in Drew County

…it was confirmed that the skull belonged to a human…

…there is a person who has been missing since January of 2015 but until they have the results from the crime lab, there is no way to know for sure if it is the missing person.

Deputies received a report on Dec. 27 from a hunter who believed he had found a human skull along a shooting lane where he hunted, according to the sheriff's office.

The remains were reportedly "weathered greatly" and had to have been in the area for an extended amount of time.

Authorities said they have ordered some cadaver dogs to help locate the other remains of the body.
