Is this case a misunderstanding, or criminal medical child abuse? We will have to wait and see.

A woman has been arrested for allegedly putting something in her child's intravenous line at Cincinnati Children's hospital, records show.

Candida "Candy" Fluty, 35, of Kermit, West Virginia, was arrested on charges of child endangerment and felonious assault over the weekend, according to inmate records.

She "knowingly injected a substance into the victim's peripheral IV line" in a hospital room, the arrest report reads.

The grand jury heard the case, and the mom was indicted, charged with felonious assault and criminal child endangerment:

Appearing for the first time since being arrested during the weekend, Candy Fluty stood before a Hamilton County judge during her arraignment Monday morning.

The 35-year-old, who's from Mingo County, West Virginia, is accused of injecting a substance into her 9-year-old son, Elijah's IV while he was being treated at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

According to the criminal complaint, charges were filed based on Fluty's own statements and video evidence. However, investigators have yet to say exactly what Fluty is accused of putting into Elijah's IV.

In court Monday, Fluty's attorney told the judge the entire situation was a "total misunderstanding," but the judge said the court was concerned about the fact Fluty took it upon herself to inject the boy, according to the allegations.

Elijah Fluty's aunt Katie told a Cincinnati TV station Candy Fluty was arrested for allegedly putting saline in her son's IV line. The aunt claims the boy had a blood clot, and Candy called for a nurse. The aunt says before the nurse could get to the room, Candy pushed saline into her son's IV system.

The 9 year old child was born with Hirschprung's Disease (a serious, life long bowel condition). The mom has 4 children all together. She was held on $50K bond, and was expected to bond out this week.

What struck me as a health care provider is that original stories said that they had caught the mom on video camera doing this. Security cameras are not routinely in patient rooms. Usually, if there are worries of medical child abuse, a court order has to be sought to surreptitiously videotape within the patient room, due to privacy reasons.

There are rooms in larger Pediatric Hospitals that have cameras in them in case this is a concern. They only turn the cameras on if they think there may be a problem.
If the mom thought the son's IV needed flushed with saline, call the nurse. I am an RN but I would never take it upon myself to add anything to my child's IV. I am there to be the mother, there are other nurses available.

A grand jury indicts a West Virginia mother on charges that she intentionally put fecal matter into her son's IV as he received treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Candida Fluty, of Kermit West Virginia, is charged with felonious assault and two counts of endangering children...

According to the prosecutor's officer, Fluty's son spiked a fever shortly after the feces was put into his IV. The boy is now in the custody of West Virginia Children's Services and is living with an aunt.

Ok-- this is no accident. She was trying to make this child SEPTIC. :gaah:

So glad they caught her before he died or became even sicker, but the tradeoff is that she will probably get a light sentence, if convicted at all. She's out on bond, but can have no contact with the boy. Throw the book at her and then strip her of her parental rights, IMO. I'm starting to think we need a whole forum for these medical child abuse cases. Just so infuriating!!

CINCINNATI -- A West Virginia mother injected feces into her son’s intravenous line as he recovered from surgery at a local hospital, according to Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters.

During Fluty’s arraignment on Monday, Jan. 19, Hamilton County Municipal Judge Cheryl Grant set a $50,000 bond and ordered the mother to stay away from her son. At the time authorities did not know what substance Fluty injected into the IV.

“I asked if she was a nurse (Candy Fluty), if she was his caretaker,” the judge said during a heated exchange with Fluty’s defense attorney. “I wanted to, when they gave me these facts, I wanted to know why she was -- the allegation was she injecting something into him, so I'm inquiring as to her status with her son and I was informed she had no status other than the fact that she was a mother and her son was in the hospital. Right?”

Story is hitting the national news:

Sick! Dealt with a similar case many many years ago at a different job........

Candy Fluty is facing 8 years in prison on the charges.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters says 35-year-old Candida Fluty, of Kermit, West Virginia, was indicted Tuesday in Cincinnati on charges of felonious assault and child endangering. Deters says Fluty could face up to eight years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Julie Wilson, chief assistant prosecutor and public information officer, said Deters would not be available for further comment beyond a press release on Tuesday.“Joe has made the comment that he feels there was a possibility of Munchausen Syndrome,” Wilson said.Wilson said she was not aware of any psychological tests to confirm that.

http://www.kait8.com/story/27946363/mother-allegedly-injects-son-with-feces

Fluty's 9-year-old son has spent most of his life in-and-out of hospitals struggling with a disease called Hirschprung's that affects the colon, according to family members. Now prosecutors suspect his illness may have been exaggerated or intensified by his own mother suffering from a mental disorder called Munchausen by Proxy...

On Fluty's public Facebook page, which has since been taken down, she shared pictures of her son as the Kick-Off Kid for Children's Hospital at a Cincinnati Bengals game in December. She also put up several posts about his medical condition.

The day before her arrest, Fluty wrote that her son had 9 teeth removed and a “tube changed." He was taking morphine, she added, expressing hopes the slight fever he developed came as a side effect from anesthesia.

BBM. This woman is going to prison for a long time.

And with the benefit of hind-sight, it would’ve been nice if hospital security cameras had shown that it was indeed saline that Fluty had put into her boy. Instead, however, security cameras revealed the substance to be something far more vile and disturbing, as the mom actually put the boy’s own feces into his IV drip bag to further worsen his condition, reports the Daily Mail.

The security footage shows Fluty in the act of taking the feces from the boy’s colostomy bag and using a syringe to inject it into her son’s IV drip bag.

Now Candy Fluty may be headed for a long stay in prison after being indicted on four felony counts for knowingly inflicting physical harm on her son by injecting feces into his IV bag.

More details on this horrible case of medical child abuse. Sounds like they have pretty good evidence. Pity she is only facing 8 years, but I'm so glad the child is away from her and doing well. She should permanently lose custody and all contact with this vulnerable child, IMO. She has a total of 4 children.

On 700 WLW radio show in Cincinnati, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters gave details of the crime.

"She put it into his IV," Deters said. "When she does this, his fever spikes, as you would expect. Again, we're just thankful the hospital caught this before the child was killed. We don't believe her intent was to kill the child. We believe her intent was to make him sick, and she succeeded."

Deters says Fluty was under video surveillance for the past year after hospital officials suspected she was tampering with her son's care.

"Things were not making sense to them," Deters told 700 WLW. "When he was there before, some of the IV lines had been broken."

Well, it's even worse than what news articles are reporting about the fecal matter injected. Here is an interview with Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters, on the Bill Cunningham internet radio show. Begin listening at 16:20 and the discussion of Candy Fluty's actions and charges continues to about 27:40.

What the prosecutor reveals:

-She had long been suspected by children's hospital of Munchausen By Proxy. Previous admissions had many unexplained and strange events happen to the IV lines-- broken, etc.

- They videotaped her child's admissions for a year

- She is seen taking her son's colostomy bag into the bathroom with a syringe. She comes out and injects into the boy's IV line. He spikes a temp. She takes pictures and posts on facebook.

- Somehow they did DNA testing of the contents of the bag, or the boy's blood (I'm fuzzy on what was tested), and tests revealed vaginal cells and tissue mixed with fecal material! Prosecutor Deters theorizes she urinated into the colostomy bag before withdrawing the "sample" she injected into her son.

Assistant Prosecutor Ann Flanagan is prosecuting the case. Judge Metz (sp?) is the judge. Prosecutor is confident they will convict on all counts and she will receive an 8 year sentence.

Candy Fluty remains free on $50K bond, no contact with this child, child is in custody of WV child services, and living with an aunt.

This got Münchausen syndrome by proxy all over it.

Well, as K_Z said earlier, at least the boy is still alive, away from his mother now and he should improve. We all know where this would have gone if she hadn't been caught -- another sad and so unnecessary death for someone who had just started living. And who knows yet how much of his current condition may have been exacerbated by whatever she may have done to him. Maybe research on what she may have done might be a bit easier on this one since it appears that ~mom~ and her kids were not as transitory as L. Spears. Grrrrrr.

What is wrong with people???

*Documents are all locked because of sensitivity to minor victim. This might be a difficult case to follow long term. Because the child is living, there may be little available online up until the trial or plea. Sadly, the same privacy that protects the living child, also shields the accused perpetrator in cases like these.

That said, I have to wonder why the prosecutor was allowed/ able to give such a detailed interview about the evidence and investigation on the internet radio show?

Next scheduled activity is March 10 with Judge Metz-- docket says plea or trial setting.

Candy Fluty pleaded guilty to injecting her son's IV line with feces. She has received a sentence of 6 years in prison. She avoided an 8 year sentence, and had several charges dropped. Six years doesn't seem like enough time to me, but I'm glad she's behind bars. Her chronically ill son will be 15-16 when she gets out of prison, if she doesn't get parole. I doubt she will ever have custody of him, or her other kids ever again.

A West Virginia woman accused of deliberately making her 9-year-old son sick by contaminating his IV at a Cincinnati hospital pleaded guilty Wednesday to endangering a child and was sentenced to six years in prison.

Candida Fluty had earlier pleaded not guilty to two counts each of felonious assault and child endangering and could have been sentenced to eight years if convicted of all charges. The other three counts were dismissed Wednesday as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

A court official said the judge has allowed the 35-year-old woman from Kermit a one-week delay before starting her sentence.
