Anyone read any updates on this? I can't find anything online.

The son Henri was found sitting outside family home after the murders, he had a phone in his hands. The neighbor who found him called police. His sister is recovering from a wound to the jugular vein and head trauma, LE is not allowing family to visit her. The son Henri is staying with an uncle, the family lawyer says Henri will get all the "professional help needed".

South African newspaper Cape Argus reported there was no sign of a break-in at the home and that son Henri was found with scratches running down his arms.

Police had taken him in for questioning as a witness, the report said. ( But now is with uncle according to latest)

I don't understand. Henri is allowed to stay with an uncle? Does that mean he was not involved? Then where did the scartches come from and why wasnt he attacked with an axe too?

I just hope that this time, South African police have fully secured the crime scene and make sure it stays that way. I also hope young Marli recovers, so she can identify who did this.

Very, very wealthy family. But I don't think money will turn out to be the issue here, myself. Certainly not robbery or attempted kidnapping, anyhow. In my opinion.

It is a very confusing report, there are no other suspects, no intruders.......... so that leaves one person and he accessed his fb page yesterday and staying with an Uncle, all very strange but so typical of SA, imo. :aktion1:

But the news stories are consistently saying no sign of break-in or security breach. To me, that reads the same as 'somebody inside the house prior to the doors being locked and the security being turned on for the night.' Was there anyone else in the house, spending the night?

The chairman of the estate's homeowners' association, Eben Potgieter, said the police had been given footage recorded at about the time of the crime. "The [footage covers] all entrances to and exits from the estate, and includes [entry] card systems and biometrics systems," Potgieter said.
"We are sending out a memo to all homeowners about increasing alertness but we believe there was no security breach along the 8km of electric fence on the estate.

"This was an isolated incident confined to the crime scene."

Tributes pour in for axe murder victim

Cape Town - As news of the brutal murder of the Van Breda family reached Australian shores, friends of 22-year-old Rudi van Breda posted tributes on his Facebook page, describing him as a “great guy who would be sorely missed”.

On the day of the murders, association chairman Eben Potgieter said there had been signs of a break-in and it was “an isolated incident, confined to the scene of the crime”.
A blood-spattered axe had been found inside the home.

I think you're right Z.

ENCA aired an audio clip purported to be the phonecall Henri van Breda made to emergency services following the attack.
The operator asks him what kind of injuries had been sustained.
Van Breda replies: “My family and me were attacked by a guy with an axe”.
Operator: “Unconscious, huh?”
Van Breda: “And bleeding from the head”.

No matter who is ultimately found to be the culprit, shock does weird things to people.

Henri van Breda ‘giggles’ in emergency call to report axe attack that killed three family

SOUTH African police remain tight-lipped on the brutal murder of a Melbourne University student and his parents at a golf resort near Cape Town as emergency call audio appears to show the youngest son giggling.
The Van Bredas’ 16-year-old daughter Marli remains in a stable condition in hospital after suffering a severe head trauma and a severed jugular.
Speculation has mounted about the state of Henri’s mental health after it was revealed he had scans for cysts on the brain at an Australian hospital early last year.

Speculation about health of Van Breda son

Cape Town - The parents of Henri van Breda, 20, who survived last week's gruesome axe attack on his family at their Stellenbosch home relatively unscathed, had reportedly been concerned about his health.
Netwerk24 spoke to a domestic worker at the De Zalze golf estate where the family lived, who said she ran into Henri in the street in October last year. He allegedly shouted at her and made inappropriate innuendos, leading her to believe he was under the influence of drugs.

Thanks PrimeSuspect, also from your last link:
Meanwhile, the Times reported that Henri was taken back to the crime scene last Friday, but police would not say why. It is believed to be the first time he has returned to the family home since the attack. Forensic investigators are reportedly still working on the scene.

JMO, but I find it interesting that the phrase HVB allegedly used is, "My family and me," not "we." Just my armchair psychology view.

Looks like there could be an organic basis for mental disturbance, IMO.

Henri, who suffered a bruise to his head and scratches during the ordeal, is currently staying with an uncle and undergoing counselling in nearby Stellenbosch and may not attend a memorial service for his family on Thursday.
It has been reported he had scans for cysts on the brain at an Australian hospital last year.

BBM
But this report mentioned by Primesuspect above seems to refute an organic brain disorder.
