A 20-year secret history of drugs and violence has finally been revealed after the wife of a Bavarian cop came forward to say he had raped and repeatedly assaulted her. 1.8 kilos of cocaine were found in his police locker, for personal use, he says.

Identified only as Armin N, the officer was a commissioner in charge of the drug squad in Kempten, Bavaria, Germany. He was only arrested in February last year after he allegedly beat and raped his wife - an attack which he has not challenged and says he is 'deeply ashamed' of. The rape followed a previous attack where his wife jumped from a balcony and cracked a vertebra after he threatened to kill her. He then jumped in his car and drove to the police department, so drunk he can't recall why - although he says he may have intended to shoot himself.

Armin said his slide into substance addiction began in 1994 when he had access to drugs for training purposes. He claims to have had the cocaine block for 10 years but can't recall where he got it - probably from a colleague or the prosecutor's office, he says!

A verdict in the trial is set for February 9 but a plea bargain where Armin gets a six or seven year sentence is being discussed. Some domestic violence activists are concerned about the possibility of such a light sentence for such serious crimes.

Forgot to say his wife says she was too afraid of him to come forward before and he has already paid her €35,000 and her court costs, in damages.
