Authorities plan to exhume a man’s body that had its head and hands removed when it was found nearly 30 years ago along a rural highway in Warren County...

A squirrel hunter stumbled across the remains on the Tuesday after Memorial Day in 1987 in a sparsely-populated area about nine miles north of Warrenton. Officials estimated the man had been there four to five days.

The man, who had very fair skin, had been decapitated, and his hands were chopped off just above the wrist. Police believe it was an attempt to hide his identity by eliminating fingerprints...

Police believe the man was between 35 and 45. He stood 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 inches tall and weighed 230 to 245 pounds. He had an irregular scar on his right side, approximately two inches long, that appeared to be an old gunshot wound that had not been treated professionally. He also had seven broken ribs...

An autopsy revealed the man had an enlarged heart and was suffering from hypertension and coronary artery disease. His toxicology report came back positive for alcohol and cocaine. His stomach contained the remnants of a recent meal – a hamburger, french fries and peaches.

Among the man's clothing and personal effects were a dark blue 1987 Rose Bowl t-shirt (size XL), white Nike hightops (size 9), and Oscar de la Renta jeans (hemmed two inches), along with 82 cents and a 1983 gold-colored token from the Kansas City International Airport.

There are more photos at the St Louis Dispatch link, along with various theories about who this fellow could possibly be.

I found this guy who went missing from Arkansas. He's a perfect match, down to the gunshot scar...except he went missing in 1995, not 1987...

Argh. At least I noticed before I had the post all typed in.

A team of experts exhumed the body of a man Monday whose headless, handless body was dumped along a rural highway in Warren County nearly 30 years ago...

The delicate work began a few minutes before 10 a.m., after a brief but heavy downpour sent investigators for cover under a tent set up near the unmarked grave at the Warrenton City Cemetery. About 30 people from nearly a dozen agencies, including the Missouri Highway Patrol, the FBI and the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office circled the site as a loader scooped up shovelfuls of grass, then mud. Because the remains were placed in a body bag, then buried in a wooden box, investigators had to go slowly, switching to shovels, then buckets and eventually their hands. They used a sifter to make sure they weren't missing anything...

Schmutz said after the man's remains are cleaned up, they will be sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification. The man's identity could be known in just a few days if his DNA is in the FBI database or if any family members have provided DNA for a match.

In a few days? Really? It's taken nine months to a year to get results in recent Oklahoma cases from UNT, even with probable identities that only needed to be confirmed. See Jamisons; also Foss Lake.

Dump job, all right.

Approximate location since it doesn't say which side: http://goo.gl/maps/Jbp6N

Looking at the map, it's quite obvious they pulled off U.S. 40 / I-70 to highway W to dump the body, then continued to W where it changes to A then south on A to U.S. 40 / I-70, completing the loop. A quick gateway.

I've been reading that there's new DNA sequencing technology available that is much faster than the previous tools. It can do in a week or two what the old tools needed months to accomplish. I don't know whether it's readily available yet but I'm hoping that LE labs everywhere adopt it quickly.
