A woman found dead near the entrance of an upscale neighborhood in Bastrop was the Victim Services Coordinator for the Kyle Police Department. Bastrop investigators have identified the 29-year-old woman as Samantha Dean who, according to her parents, was six months pregnant...

A Bastrop County Sheriff’s deputy patrolling the parking lot at 118 Stephen F. Austin Blvd. at 2 a.m. Wednesday found Dean’s body lying next to a late-model black Dodge Charger that had one of its doors open. The car was parked behind the Shoppes at Colony Village shopping center, just west of the city border at the entrance to an upscale neighborhood. The shopping center has stood vacant since it was built seven years ago...

Her parents, Kelvin and Kimberly Dean, said Dean was diagnosed with cancer in her elbow at the age of 18, but went on to graduate from the University of Texas-San Antonio while undergoing chemo, radiation and multiple surgeries.

From young children to retired veterans, everyone gathered on the Interstate 35 overpass in Kyle to pay their respects to a woman who contributed greatly to the city's crime victims.

"She has been there for so many people," said Rachel Plant, whose husband is a Kyle police officer. "So everybody wants to come out and just celebrate her, as she comes through our town one last time"...

The Kyle community dedicated their Saturday morning to honor Samantha Dean... Her parents and police escorted her body from Lockhart to San Antonio, where her parents live.

Curious if she was lured there by someone since none of the shops were open and also if the unborn baby's father fits into the scenario in any way.

Praying LE will be able to apprehend whoever did this...

From what I have read that is an abandoned development-and news reports have alluded to shady goings on in the parking lot.
This is a heinous crime against a young woman who led an exemplary life helping others. Social workers don't get paid a whole lot-she was hired on a grant. She chose a career to help society and some &*^%& shot her cold-bloodedly in a dark parking lot in the wee hours of the morning-she with child.
No words.....

Pan-after I wrote the above-it occurred to me that IF ".....the unborn baby's father fits into the scenario....', then it must have been a person with money to lose-meaning that person has a good steady income etc. OR is married or whatever.
When will greed cease to take lives? It seems to be a factor in murders throughout the ages.

Being an abandoned shopping mall, I cannot fathom why she would have been there unless it was to meet someone, such as being lured there under false pretense. Perhaps by someone she knew through her work?

Again, just tragic...two innocent lives lost.

I wonder who the car is registered to. No mention of husband/boyfriend. This makes me think LE suspect that Dean's murder was personal vs. professionally related:

<snip>
Police spent Thursday searching her South Austin home for any clues that could lead them to a suspect.

Unless... LE is searching Dean's computer and telephones for messages which indicate someone requested her assistance. It could be that she got caught in the middle of someone else's domestic dispute.

So sad that such a bright and caring young woman who helped victims of violence became a victim of violence herself.

I don't know if there have ever been any tenants in the shopping mall. It kind of looks like something that was built but never occupied.

The subdivision whose entrance is right at the shopping center is very nice and I know the occupants were horrified to hear of this very intelligent and altruistic woman's brutal murder. (I have close relatives that live there and their listserv was very active with concerned people when this happened).

I assumed that this was a domestic incident, with the pregnancy and all, but Indy Anna's post about her advocate work playing a part is a very interesting theory. I wonder how much case work, if any, victim advocates do after hours?

Yes, indeed. Been waiting for some mention of a potential father. From your KXAN ilnk:

A source within the Austin Police Department confirms that one of their officers is on leave in connection with the investigation of a murdered Kyle Police Department employee...

A source tells us the unnamed officer is on paid leave as investigators look at whether he was the father of the baby Dean was carrying. DNA tests would confirm who the father is.

A cold-blooded murder of one of their own-justice will serve here. My heart is broken for this young vibrant person who served to help vicitms. The worst kind of betrayal would come from one of your own. I can't imagine her last moments here on earth.

IF it turns out to be a member of LE-the death penalty should apply, in my opinion. He killed 2 human beings.

She wanted to be a cop but her cancer got in the way-but that still didn't stop her from being a public servant in the law enforcement field. This girl went up against all odds-female-black-sick........didn't stop her. She got all her education squared away. Got a job as victim advocate no less-funded by a grant--anf then she die's a lonely shocking moment of death in early morning darkness of a rural area? Some selfish *advertiser censored* set her up with a hit or he did it himself. I am so angry (yeah-again) and heartbroken for her.
I so feel for her family.
I am encouraged however, by Austin Police Chief Acevedo being so transparent in the investigation and revealing the latest info re her murder. This is what it takes to help family, friends, and the public deal with these crimes. Break it to us slowly yes-but break it to us so we can roll with the punches.

rant over........off to pray some more. After I cry in helplessness and bewilderment for good people gone too soon.

Devastating.

My relative that lives in the subdivision near the shopping center told me today that he was talking with a LE friend who said that that particular spot is a favorite of local officers to sit and do some catching up (on paperwork or computer work or something). I don't know what branch/town parks there (Bastrop? Austin? Sheriff?) but apparently it's a pretty common happening.

IMHO, LE already has this solved, they just need to tie the evidence together.

JMHO
of course!

highlighting the news reports:
Special Investigations Unit

A source tells us the Austin Police’s Special Investigations Unit is assisting Bastrop County Sheriff’s Deputies.

This is the same unit that typically looks into officer-involved shootings.

These are Austin police officers who conduct criminal investigations involving all sworn peace officers and police department employees alleged to have committed a crime within APD’s jurisdiction. It is different from the Internal Affairs unit which looks into alleged policy breaches by officers both from inside the department and from the public.

The SIU was originally created in 1999 to investigate criminal incidents involving a potential abuse of power involving APD officers.

The Unit’s motto is “Leave No Stone Unturned in Seeking the Truth.”

Don't Mess With Texas

So is he on leave because he broke some rule having a relationship with her?
Or because he is so distraught that he cannot do his job properly?
Or because they suspect that he was involved and don't want a killer on their force?

Amazing how quickly the pieces of this puzzle seem to have fallen into place. It will be interesting to hear the "how". I hope for her family LE does have the correct person. Such a shame for a promising young lady just starting her career. Prayers for her family.

Also, I believe in Texas the murder of a pregnant woman is automatically a capital offense. I'll look for a cite to that effect.

<snip> In 2009, Texas lawmakers changed the laws to make the murder of a pregnant woman a capital murder offense.

"It becomes capital murder, meaning you could get the death penalty if you kill two people in one transaction, or if you kill a child under the age of 10," said Judge Jon Wisser, a senior judge working in the Travis County courts.
