Authorities say Cpl. Richard Schroeter pulled the trigger on his firearm while discussing the trigger mechanism during a Sept. 30 training session. The weapon discharged, killing 26-year-old Trooper David Kedra.

Prosecutors in Montgomery County say grand jurors were asked to consider charges of homicide, involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment. The prosecutors announced Tuesday that the panel found sufficient evidence that Schroeter put those present in harm's way by not following safety precautions. The 43-year-old is charged with five counts of recklessly endangering another person.

Schroeter's attorney, Timothy Woodward, said his client was "wracked with remorse" but declined comment on the charges.

"This is an absolute tragedy," he said. "Right now, our thoughts and prayers are with the Kedra family for their loss."

Woodward also said his client had been a dedicated public servant during 20 years with the state police and 14 years as a volunteer firefighter.

The state trooper man accused of recklessly using a firearm that led to the death of a fellow trooper waived his formal arraignment scheduled for Wednesday effectively entering a plea of not guilty.

Richard Schroeter, 42, waived the formal arraignment that was scheduled for Wednesday, April 1. By waiving his arraignment, Schroeter did not have to make an appearance in court.

Online court records do not show when his next court hearing is scheduled.

    From August:

    http://articles.philly.com/2015-08-3...ellent-trooper

For more than an hour, witnesses and observers shed tears amid testimony about the two officers. Lawyers argued how justice could be served in an unthinkable accident that took the life of one trooper and ended the stellar career of another.

In the end, Judge Garrett D. Page sentenced Schroeter to two weeks in jail and three to 18 months of house arrest. He will be released from jail days before the first anniversary of Kedra's death...

Schroeter will also serve four years of probation, perform 150 hours of community service, and pay a $1,000 fine.
