"On Thursday, police were called to the 0-100 block of Whitworth Road N.E., to check on the welfare of a woman found lying in a backyard. She was declared deceased at the scene, police said in a news release.

Following an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim was identified as Dawn Echoes Baptiste, 31, of no fixed address in Calgary.''


Police are asking for assistance in tracing her last known movements in the area.

" Calgary police have released five surveillance camera images, hoping the public can help identify a person of interest in the city's fifth homicide of 2015.

The remains of a 31-year-old woman were found outside of a home in northeastern Calgary last Thursday.

The remains were discovered when police went to check on reports that a woman was lying in the backyard of a home in the 0-100 block of Whitworth Road Northeast."

With all due respect - the suspect in this photo is clearly an aboriginal male. What the heck? What will an inquiry on missing and murdered aboriginal women say in the end? The same as the RCMP have already told us? That for the most part, aboriginal men kill aboriginal women? Those are the stats so far.

Would like to see aboriginal women stand up and acknowledge that is the case - so I can support them - or stand up and tell me different, with stats - so I can support them. Silence by aboriginal women is not working - only my opinion. Who is killing Canadian aboriginal women - for the most part? I would definitely like to know and am sure that many others would as well. It's an atrocious act that needs to stop - but we can't do it without the voices of victims and their families. Look at the Bill Cosby case - unite and be heard - people will listen. Jmo.
 
Yep - the other big problem with aboriginal women - dependency on drugs or alcohol. Accounts for the silence? If so, it will account for the outcome or lack of it, imo. How do we as Canadian citizens help? I don't know.

Don't expect the current or future spokesperson for women (KL) to do or say much on behalf of aboriginal women - she has told us so far what she is allowed to say.

Let's not leave her or any other government person in charge of the voices that need to be heard - stats show it's not working. Jmo.

Sounds like she just landed full time employment and was trying to get on her feet financially. It also sounds like she was very well regarded. I am very thankful that there was a suspect identified and caught relatively quickly.

Fwiw - would prefer LE used a more flattering picture of the victim. She may have had issues in the past, but if she was truly trying to get past that phase of her life, good for her. Imo, the picture released shows bias on the part of LE. Not impressed by LE.
 
I agree the picture is very unflattering. I also object to the word homeless...article states she was staying with friends and that was why she was probably in the area.

He's 25 yrs old --- hard to believe that he has such a lengthy record of violent crime. He was sentenced to 16 months in September yet the video says he was on 2 yr probation at time of arrest for Dawn's murder. Someone will have to explain to me sentencing of 16 months and yet he's on parole.....I'm confused.....

She lived on the street and frequented the drop-in centre. There are several organizations available to street people. The Drop-In Centre is for drunks, and the Mustard Seed is for people that want to change their lives. That this woman lived on the streets suggests and was associated with the Drop-In centre suggests that she was one of the drunk homeless people. The fact that nothing is known about the recent events prior to her death suggests that whomever murdered her was with her prior to her death, and drunkenness may have played a factor. Was she aboriginal? If so, it's more likely that the people that she was with, whom she perceived as friend(s) are responsible for her murder.
 
Curtis Healy will go to trial next year.

A man accused of killing a 31-year-old Calgary mother last February will stand trial two years after her murder happened.

Curtis Healy is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Dawns Echoes Baptiste, a mother of four whose body was found in a Whitehorn backyard on Feb. 12, 2015.

Healy is scheduled for a three-week jury trial in February 2017.

Murder trial delayed after accused changes lawyer

A trial for a man charged with killing a 31-year-old Calgary mother is being delayed after the accused has changed lawyers.

The new lawyer for Curtis Healy also expressed concerns in court Thursday about his mental health.

On Thursday, the judge in the case agreed with the application. Healy will now be sent to the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre for a 30 days assessment.

The trial is now tentatively scheduled for three weeks beginning October 2, 2017.
