At least 20 dead by electrocution in Haiti Carnival accident

Port-au-Prince (AP) At least 20 people were killed and 46 were injured on a music group's packed Carnival float in the Haitian capital Tuesday when they were electrocuted by a power line, officials said.

The accident occurred as thousands of people filled the streets of downtown Port-au-Prince for the raucous annual celebration. People at the scene said someone on the float used a pole or stick to move a power line so the float could pass under it.

The float was carrying a popular Haitian rap group called Barikad Crew, Haiti's Radio Metropole reported.

It struck a cable as it passed underneath it in a parade watched by tens of thousands of people.

The rap group's star singer, who goes by the name "Fantom", was struck directly by the fallen cable and is in critical condition, the website Haiti Press Network said.

How horrible and terrifying. Those poor people.

Details remain sketchy, and evidently Barikad Crew's lead singer, Fantom, remains in critical condition, with perhaps other group members injured (or dead). An ill-starred crew, that one; from Wiki:

On 15 June 2008, 3 members of the group (K-tafalk, Deja-Voo, Dade) died in a car accident while they were on their way to a concert in Haiti. Less than 2 years later, another member, Young Cliff died in the January 2010 earthquake.
