According to what I've read, he lives on Coleman St. near Quentin Rd. in Marine Park, a Brooklyn neighborhood. The family has said that "Brian started walking from home two days ago at 9 AM. He was wearing an orange shirt, jeans, a black winter jacket and tan hiking boots. Based on his internet history we may have a higher likelihood of finding him in one of the following places:
    Fort Tilden
    Fort Greene
    Marine Park Golf Course
    Madison Square Park
    Prospect Park / Greenwood Cemetery"

Salt Marsh Nature Preserve has already been searched.

Gewirtz, who is 5’4″ and 130 lbs., is autistic and diabetic. He requires medication for his diabetes. Gewirtz’s family says he may be disoriented or lethargic and that he is shy and not violent. He was last seen wearing an orange shirt and may have changed into a maroon or gray horizontally striped shirt/sweater.

Was he in communication with anyone???? Not to sound stupid but "spoken language" is what he has difficulty understanding---so reading and or writing is his means of communication?? Does his neurological diorder extend to money and difficulty understanding counting change or bills---does he have a metrocard or bus pass???? Did he belong to a group of some sort? Or play on-line games????
IMO there is something being left out of this story could just be sloppy journalism....

Christopher Gewirtz announced on Facebook that the search for his missing brother Brian Gewirtz is now “being directed by someone who worked on the Avonte Oquendo case.”

The volunteer — who spent three months looking for Avonte — recommended volunteers focus their attention on city subway lines.

Volunteers handed out fliers at the Barclays Center station in downtown Brooklyn Saturday morning, Brian’s father, Steven Gewirtz, said. A few hours later they were told of a possible sighting of Brian in Dyker Heights, but by the time volunteers got there, the man who looked like Steven’s missing son had moved on.

Loved ones say he has never wandered off and can’t imagine where he went. They believe he could be on the trains trying to stay out of the cold.

Gewirtz’s mother, Kathleen, told 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern he might not ask for help. “He may not realize that he’s lost,” she said. “He doesn’t really have a concept of time, so he may not realize how long it’s been.”

Praying for him. With the cold weather and his diabetes, I really fear the worst.

New York City Family's Desperate Search for Autistic Son

Brian Gerwitz, a 20-year-old Brooklyn man on the spectrum, has been missing since Feb. 17 . Desperate for getting the public's help, the Gerwitz family created a Facebook page dedicated to his being found. Gerwitz' disappearance has drawn comparisons to Avonte Oquendo's tragic wandering case in 2013. Oquendo, a 14-year-old boy with autism, slipped out of his New York City school. A few months later, his remains were found on the waterfront near College Point in Queens. The tragic incident helped spur politicians to create Avonte's Law quires the Department of Justice make grants to law enforcement agencies for finding people in case of elopements. New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio signed it into City Law in August 2014. The bill will most notably make optional tracking technology available to families who request it.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Family of missing man with special needs found dead in Marine Park calls for change
    8:21 PM, April 4, 2015

The sad finding ended an intense search by the Gewirtz family, and the dozens of volunteers who joined them. One of them, community advocate Marie Delus said the area of the golf course had been searched, but there were limitations.

“They went all the way deep in there. It’s just that we couldn’t get exactly where he was which is close to the Belt Parkway. No volunteers could physically get over there,” said Delus.

Rivera said there needs to be as much of an urgent effort to find missing adults with special needs as there is to locate missing children.

“They need to be found the same way as amber alerts,” she said.

“When someone is missing, a vulnerable adult or child, we need to stop everything, and just look for them. Bring out the helicopters, bring out the dogs,” said Delus.
